I need double stroller help

I've been researching and debating & in the end I still have no idea. When I found out I was PG with number 2 I really wanted a sit and stand type double stroller. I thought the one with 2 full seats where the back one is removeable would be ideal. My DD will be 2y9m when LO is born in December. I figure by the time it's spring & we will be out and about more DD will be 3 (she is not the type to happily walk along with mommy, some sort of stroller is a must) This was my reasoning for the sit and stand...I like the option of the real seat, standing, or little seat. Well from everything I've read just about all brands have gotten pretty bad reviews for one reason or another.

Now I'm debating getting a double jogger but they are so wide. I'm not sure how that will work out for mall shopping etc. I've found it pretty hard to find any double stroller that will accept universal car seats. The one I have doesn't expire until 2013. I'd rather not buy a new one just so it will fit in the stroller.

I don't want to spend more than about $300. Anyone have any thoughts on this? My brain is fried & I'm stumped.

* my other issue right now is space I'd rather the stroller wasn't too huge when folded. I know it's a double and no matter what it is going to be big but I have a honda civic currently and have to worry about trunk space. Hopefully this will be resolved shortly after LO is born. Still trying to convince DH that 2 kids, a stroller and groceries will not fit in my car.

Re: I need double stroller help

  • Have you looked at the Joovy Caboose?  It is a sit and stand style, but not by babytrend.  I know three people who have it and rave about it.
  • Loading the player...
  • We actually are looking at a few and the guy at buy..baby said there will be alot more coming out in the end this yr/start of next.  We really want tandem so we don't take too much space, apparently all the companies are starting to jump on the double idea.

    HTH

  • I want a double Bob. I love our single and the double I tried works out great. But it is pretty pricey and I don't know how long we would really use it for.

It is far more likely, though, that we are going to get a very basic sit and stand for things like mall trips, and a wagon for all our other trips. DS was also a November baby, and we didn't really get out a whole lot due to weather and flu season. (DS turns 2 two days before my due date. lol) So really the baby will be 4 or 5 months old before I get out too much.

And most of the time I will wear her, until she is big enough to sit up on her own.

The best thing to do is take LO to the store, put them in the stroller, and see if they like it. DS hated the Joovy and the City Mini. So we are still hunting.

  • I would really think hard about getting a double.  My two boys were 21 months apart.  The eldest didn't last very long in the stroller after that.  Maybe a few months.  With yours already being further apart then mine were, if I remember your ticker correctly, I would just see about getting a baby carrier.

I am thinking about the Ergo.  You can get an infant insert so you can start wearing your LO from day one!

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)
  • I lucked out with buying a used double stroller from a friend of mine. It's a fisher price, and she bought it from a different friend, but it hasn't been used more than 5 times. The reason is because the first owner's older child was almost 4, so she wasn't wasn't interested in sitting in a stroller. The 2nd owner's little girl was 3, and same exact issue. This child was in no way willing to sit or stand. I debated on if I should get it or not. DD will be 22 months so I think I can get at least a year out of it. I made a list of when I would be using it to see if it would be really worth buying, since like you mentioned it is very bulky. Like you we don't have "room" so we are in search for a van. Here's when I will need it, doctor's appointments, as I don't want my almost 2yr old running in a parking lot. Church, we go to a big church and again I don't want to be carrying a newborn and DD. DH would need it for his mall walks and we would need it for outdoor walks, though DD may walk some too. I may need it for zoo's, though it would be NEEDED, because I would never go w/out another adult so we could just use the umbrella stroller and the other stroller we have. Maybe check craigslist too.
  • Have you checked out Phil & Teds? I have no idea how much they cost but the family I worked for has one of these and I really liked it. Its not double wide and it sits one child sort of under the other...AND it has three wheels so its really easy to maneuver and its well balanced.

  • I don't plan on getting a double stroller yet.  I don't think I'll even use one except maybe in the mall or at a zoo or something.  I'm due in November, so I don't think a zoo trip is in the cards til spring, and I'm not a mall goer typically.  By the time spring gets here, I don't even know if DD will want to sit in a stroller.  She does well now, but the second we stop moving, she wants out.  I got a carrier and plan on using that for trips.  Who knows if that will work, but in my head, it sure makes a lot of sense.  Like grocery shopping, my plan will be to wear the baby and put DD in the front of the cart.  Sorry, that's not much help about stroller suggestions, but just my two cents.

  • I'm going with a Graco double.  Don't know which one yet.  Some PPs mentioned wearing baby, and I considered that, but it will be winter and I think I'd rather take LO from the car to wherever while still bundled in the carseat.  It gets cold here!

Thats what many of my friends say regarding the double stroller. I did the same thing as you with weighing out the if and when you would use it. Only I decided I would be using it. DD wont even be 2yrs old when this baby is born and I think/hope I'll be able to use mine. But if not it was just $80 and will easily sell on craigslist for $80.

A major flaw with the P&T is that you cannot use the infant seat in the front and put child #2 in the seat in the back.

  • Here are the strollers that we are contemplating right now: Graco Double Quattro (fits a car seat and older child), Kolcraft Contours (my friend has this and its very versatile), Baby Jogger City select with extra seat adaptor (this one is $600 though).
  • I have the BabyTrend Sitn'Stand with the second, removable, rear seat and love it. DD #1 was 32 months when DD#2 was born last June and we still use it all the time. It is a bit long when open, but honestly folded down it does not take up much more room in the back of my SUV than my travel system. I am excited to have it this time around as DD#2 will only be 19 months when baby #3 is born in January 2011, so we will definitly be using the extra seat for quite a while.

  • Sorry to nose in, I'm almost a 2nd Tri'er. Smile

When my daughter was born my son was 18 months, and I bought a Kolcraft Contours Options Double stroller. I ADORED it. We used it for a long time. The toddler seats can face either forward or back, face each other or out. Toddler seat reclines fully (PERFECT) and you take out the toddler seat near the handlebar to snap in a universal car seat carrier, like a SnapNGo. I could go on forever about it. I loved it. I bought mine off a website for $189 and no shipping, but that site is no longer in business. :( Target sells it for around $219, as does Burlington Coat Factory.

I loved it so much I nearly cried when I recently sold it. For the new baby I'm getting the single version in green. :D

I have this stroller.  I have the Sport Buggy and when you buy it with the doubles kit (to make it a double), its about $500, which is over what you're wanting to spend...but I would check craigslist because you can get these cheaper when they're gently used.

Its a GREAT stroller.  I love that its a jogger, but not the WIDTH of a double jogger and not the LENGTH of a front-to-back double stroller.  My kids love it and sometimes fight over who gets to sit in back (when I give them the option).  It folds pretty flat and the doubles seat is about an inch thick, so it doesn't take up ANY space in your car, plus you can decide when you want to use - so you basically have the option of having a single or double stroller.  I don't think its heavy to push at all, but its a little heavy to lift.  There are four configurations, so you can check those out and see if they work for you.  I would say that the only downside to the stroller is that the accessories can be expensive... but I don't think they're necessary at all.  In fact, I've never even bought them and I've gotten along just fine.  It doesn't come with a drink holder (but the basket's big enough, so I just throw a water bottle down there and it doesn't bother me.)   There is a carseat adapter so that you can use it as a travel system, but I never needed it, so I took it back - my carseat snapped in VERY securely without it.

I would look into it - it fits your criteria, except for the price... but you can get around that by scouring craigslist.
