Can we talk about weaning?

I am planning on weaning Caroline in November, when she turns a year old, so that we can TTC #2.

I haven't read anything about weaning, because it seemed so far away...now that it is less than 4 months from now, I feel like I need to start educating myself.

So, tell me all about when/how you weaned your LO...please?

Also, when did your LO start dropping nursing sessions?  I think she is dropping her last afternoon session and replacing them with solids (she still nurses before bed)....is that okay or do I need to cut back on her solids so that she will nurse?  I just started a lunch time meal, in addition to her breakfast and supper.  Thoughts?

TIA

Re: Can we talk about weaning?

  • My girls were nursing (E) or bottling (C) 5x/day from about 6 months onward.  They never dropped a feeding, really.  Although I feel like I'm forgetting already!  I'm pretty sure they stayed at 5x/day up until they were at least 11.5 months, and then maybe we dropped one feeding the two weeks before their birthday.  Then once their birthday hit, we started using up the frozen milk for C and I started dropping one feeding every three days for E.  Two weeks after their birthday, I nursed E for the last time.  Then it took almost another three weeks after that for my boobs to calm down.  I was always prone to clogged ducts, and weaning was no exception.  I had to massage out a lot of clogs.  I took Sudafed and put cabbage leaves in my bra to help dry things up and I don't know how much it helped, but things dried up eventually, leaving my boobs a shadow of their former selves.  (I'm joking, but yet ... not.)

You really only need to drop one feeding every three or four days, so you probably don't need to start too far in advance.
