Anyone homeschool?

With the recent class size expansions in our school district (35:1 in Kindergarten), I've been considering homeschooling more and more. Just curious if anyone does this and if so, what your experience has been like. 

Being a high school teacher myself I'm concerned that she may miss out on some serious things being home (i.e. socialization, core instruction in the area of reading, etc.) but I don't think I can place my daughter in a class with 35 5-7 year olds and expect significant learning to take place. And being on a school teacher's salary, I'm not sure we could afford private school:(

    Wow, I can't believe they went up that high in the lowest grades!  That's insane.  I believe nestie MamaV.2.0 is thinking of homeschooling... she was an elementary school teacher.  Hopefully she will chime in.

    Hey! I was homeschooled from 1st grade to high school. There are positives and negatives.

    The social aspect was taken care of through sports and church activities. Academically, I feel that the younger grades are totally doable at home. However, I feel as they go on it is more difficult to provide all they need academically. Especially in the areas of science and math.

    We probably will homeschool and use a charter school. Certain charter schools have a mix of on-site classes (traditional classroom setting) and home teaching. I think it is a perfect mix. Chase will probably attend school one day a week, and I will do the rest with him. We are going to take it one year at a time and see how it goes. We will re-evaluate every year. We have pretty much decided that will not homeschool for high school.

    Educational choices are so difficult to make. Good luck!

    My mother home schooled my younger brother and went through a charter school.  That gave her the curriculum information she needed and helped with grading his papers and over seeing his education and progress.

    He then attended a regular high school but it wasn't a good fit for him, he has/had ADHD and had just lost his mother who he spent almost every day with.  At that point my dad found a charter school in our town that allowed him to have his own teacher to over see his progress, turn in his work too and pick it up from.  He also had the option of attending class' at this school if he wanted.  At one point he was going into the school two days a week and then worked at home with my dad's help and mine the rest of the week.

    I have a friend who has an active homeschool group in the Folsom area.  I bet she'd be happy to chat about it.  She's been homeschooling her son for two or three years, and her littlest will probably start homeschooling in the fall.  I can connect you via email if you'd like.

    Unless things have changed the requirements for homeschooling in CA is pretty strict, but as long as you keep your credential active you should be fine. (In WA it is so much easier.) Z is only 4 socialization is not a problem for us because we do other activities and we have local home school groups and there are even home school classes. It is really not difficult to home school especially if you use a ready made curriculum and add your own spin.

    I'm right there with you.  In the search for the perfect (and affordable?) school I've come up empty and have been doing quite a bit of reading on homeschooling.  I've been focusing most on the Charlotte Mason theory that a good friend of mine will be starting with her children this coming year. 

    I'm not so worried about socialization.  I think homeschooling would give us the time to be able to be in a sport and other activities without overloading the kids.  There are homeschool networks that plan all sorts of regular outings and interesting group classes.  And best of all there will be more time for kids to get to know people outside of their immediate peers.  I think that it is really important for kids to spend time with the elderly, babies, etc. and learn to be comfortable with them as well as peers. 

    You being a teacher you have such an advantage!  I know there's been some static about CA and homeschooling laws and that's worrisome for me. 

    On a side note my best friend from elementary moved and was homeschooled with her 4 brothers, her from 6th on the rest were younger.  They had time for all sorts of interesting extra activities and a Russian language tutor to get them all fluent (no Russian connection in the family at all.)  She and ALL of her brothers went on to Duke University and one bro is at Harvard Law.  Um, homeschooling works ;)

    Start looking for jobs at private schools!!!!  It's a paycut for sure, but not as much as staying home to home school.
