I plan to start introducing sippy cups to the girls at 6 months, as I would really like them to be bottle-free at a year old.
So, how do I do this? Do I let them practice holding them and putting them to their mouths with nothing in it for awhile, or do I put water in it? It seems like putting formula in could get costly since I am guessing it'll be awhile before they get the hang of it. Will they have confusion between that and the bottle and start rejecting the bottle?
Sorry if these are dumb questions. I am clearly clueless. Any advice?
Thanks!
Re: need help with introducing sippy cups
What I did was put water in the cup and have it around for every meal. I would show Nico how to use it and eventually he caught on. The hard part is finding a cup your DC is willing to use. I went through many before the "right" one. There is a small one (5 oz) by NUK with a soft nipple, that they sell at Wal-Mart which is what Nico still prefers to use with his milk. After a while he finally was willing to use a hard nipple when drinking juice.
After 21 cycles, and severe MFI, we finally did it with IVF #1 w/ICSI! Nico arrived 12/3/08!!!
TTC for #2: IVF w/ICSI #2-4/17/10-BFN; IVF w/ICSI #3; 7/4/10-BFP!!! Beta #1- 96; Beta #2-528; Beta #3- 7371; 6w,5d-blited ovum=D&C
IUI #2 1/10/11-BFN; IUI #3 2/18/11-BFN
IVF #4 w/ICSI & PICSI ER 5/13/11, ET 5/1/118-BFP!! Natalee arrived on 1/23/12!!!!

I put water in it and let her play with it. I think I introduced it at 6 months too and by 9 months she was skilled at drinking from it. She loves her water now!
I know every baby is different, but Paige didn't have any trouble (and still doesn't) going from bottle to sippy. She is attached to her sippy in that she drags it around the house, wants it in the car, etc. but knows that her bottle is for bedtime.
I would just fill it with water and let the girls explore them. Help them put it up to their mouth and see what they do. It might take them a few months to get interested - but they will!
Thanks... and I LOVE your new siggy of Paige!
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
I'm glad you asked this, too! I've been thinking about starting Brady on one soon.
Your siggie pic is fantastic!!
I also didn't know you were 'supposed' to introduce sippies so early until around 7 months one of the daycare teachers asked if they were doing water in sippies yet and I was like, huh?
Once I started giving water with meals, they started to get it but I will say that they still don't drink a ton from them & they (esp DD) spit a lot of it out down their neck/chest. I also give them in the stroller on walks esp since it is so hot. I tried formula in it once around 10 months maybe and it didn't go well (spit out like the water) but I'm hoping once I'm actually replacing bottles w/ sippies it will go better.... we'll see, our milk transition will be done in a week!
