Utensils, dishes, etc

When did you start having LO use dishes at meal time and utensils to feed themselves? I'm still just putting DD's food on her high chair try or on a placemat when we go out. I haven't really tried spoons/forks with her either-not really sure when I should!

  • We still don't.. but Eve is kind of "slow" with this.. I have read that by 15 months they should be able to start to use utensils.

  • ethan has been getting bowls for a while. he's been "using" utensils since he was a year.  now when i ask if he is hungry he runs to his drawer pulls up the stepstool to pick out a spoon or fork.  he still doesn't use them right but he tries.  he always has a plate or bowl.   he'll carry his little bowl of grapes to the coffee table in the morning .

I think around 14 or 15 months I started just putting a spoon down at each meal. When he started actually trying to use it, I did hand-over-hand with him. It really started to click around 18 months, now he's really good with a spoon. We're still working on the fork. He'd still rather use his fingers, but sometimes he does really well with the fork when he puts his mind to it.
  • We have been using utensils, he does well for a beginner. I hand him the spoon/fork with food on it and he puts it in his mouth. When he wants more he hands it back for a refill! lol He tries to scoop food himself but doesn't get much.

Dishes are not easy yet, I try sometimes but he either shovels all the food into his mouth or dumps the dish so he can play with it (the dish). He does however get very excited when I do put a plate in front of him!

  • Evan has been using a spoon for a few months now to eat his yogurt. However he doesn't really do very well... he more dips the spoon and sucks on it. And he makes a huge mess! He does pretty good if I load up the spoon and hand it to him though.

Lately he is obsessed with using a fork! But he doesn't like using a toddler fork (I've tried 3 different ones), he wants to use a regular adult one. He does really good w/ it too... the other day he ate an entire peach cut up in chunks w/ a fork. I'm just afraid he's going to poke himself in the eye, so I keep a really close watch on him. I going to babies r us today, and hope to find a fork he'll use!

We have a Toy Story set from there....he loves it! The 3 little tines are rounded, and who doesn't love Buzz?
