Baby Names

How do you pronounce this name?

Evie, as in NN for Evelyn.

I once knew a little girl named Evelyn who went by EE-VIE.  I love that version, and was wondering if it is a stretch to go to that pronunciation from Evelyn rather than EH-VIE.  Thoughts?    Would you think EH-VIE or EE-VIE?

Anxiously awaiting DD #2! EDD 2/5/12

  • I thought of Ee-vie.  I think it works as a nn for Evelyn, even if it's pronounced differently.

    EH-VIE to me.

  • I think Eh-vee is growing in popularity as a nickname, while Ee-vee is not, but if I saw the name "Evie" written, my first impulse is to pronounce it Evie. The only Evelyn I've ever known also went by Ee-vee, so no, I don't think it's a stretch at all.
  • I'd say Eh-Vie personally, but I think I'm in the minority.

  • Eh-vee (like the beginning of the name sounds)

That said, there was a post on here a while back about this, and I was surprised at how many people pronounce that as EE-vee, so even though I've never heard it, I'm assuming it is somewhat common.

my first thought was to pronounce it ee-vee
  • EE-VIE....i like it :)
  • By just seeing "Evie" I would say EE-VEE unless told otherwise, but I think that either pronounciation is reasonable.

  • I automatically think EE-vie, and only recently started to hear the pronunciation of EH-vie.

Evelyn was the name of Rachel Weisz's character in the Mummy series, and her brother called her the EE-vie pronunciation.

This exactly.  And, I like it very much either way.

  • I actually wanted to use this exact name and nn, but DH isn't a fan (so I will use as a mn). My mom's name is Eve, so it would be for her, and it would be ee-vee, as I am used to hearing her name.

  • I see EE-vie (rhymes with Stevie), but I can see how some people would pronounce it Eh-vie for Evelyn.
  • Ee-vie. I don't think it's a horrible nickname for Evelyn though.

  • I would pronounce it the same as the beginning of whatever it's short for.

If I didn't know what it was short for, just seeing the name Evie, I say EE-vee

Knowing it's short for Evelyn, I say EH-vee

  • We went to Gymboree with a little girl named Evelyn, and she was called ee-vee.  Adorable!
  • My great Grandma was named Evelyn and she was called Evie, so it is always pronounced the same as her nn in my head

She was pronounced Eh-vee (like the beginning of Evelyn)
