Lack of weight gain (frustrated)

LO lost a significant amount of weight his first four days of life (one pound of his birth weight). He was having latching issues, and so I had to supplement with formula for two days. I saw a lactation consultant, and he has been latching wonderfully ever since. My LC has me feeding him every two hours, but he still is not gaining weight! He feeds for a minimum of 20 minutes each time (with full gulps and everything), and his morning feedings last 40+ minutes. I'm doing everything she and my pedi are telling me to, and they both say aside from the lack of weight gain, he looks great. My LC said I may have to supplement through a feeding tube with breast milk I've been pumping. I see my LC again tomorrow for a weight check, and my pedi again on Friday. **sigh** Please gain wait little one! Sad

  • Is he gaining any weight?  My DD didn't reach her birthweight until 3 wks & now she is growing well.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

  • He fluctuates up and down. Last Wed he was 8 lb 4 oz, on Friday, he was 8 lb 1 oz; after a feeding he transferred an ounce and a half. Today he was 7 lb 13 oz; after his feeding he transferred two ounces. My LC would like to at least see him maintain his weight.

  • Could he be nursing too long in the mornings? While in the hospital, the nurses told me not to let her go past 30 minutes, because then she starts burning calories from eating.

All the literature I've read and my LC say to let him nurse as long as he wants. Plus, the later milk they get is higher in calories, which would make him gain weight (or so one would think, but not my LO!).

  • My LO wasn't gaining weight either....the ped had me nurse every 2 hours, then pump and then give her what I pump at the next feeding.  I was breastfeeding and pumping all day but she was gaining weight normally when I did that.  Do they have you pump and give that to your LO too?

My LC has me pumping after feedings as well, but I've been storing it. I may have to use it and supplement through a feeding tube. We will see what my pedi recommends we do.

Hmmm, how would that be related? It hasn't been brought up to me yet.
