Can someone explain puffs to me?

We are going to start BLW soon, so I haven't really paid much attention to puffs.  I am just curious about this - they dissolve because they are meant to be a first finger food, right?  But wouldn't a LO need to be pretty good with the pincher grip to eat them?  So when are they actually meant to be fed to kids?  They are confusing me. Can someone please set me straight? LOL

  • We didn't do puffs until DD was closer to 8 months or so. Their pincer grasp does have to be very good, plus, in my experience, they don't necessarily dissolve on contact. DD actually choked a little on them the first time we tried them. I probably wouldn't start with them for BLW.

  • We do BLW.  Puffs are just another snack out there.  Ophelia gets them if I'm trying to get dinner made or something and she wants to be in the kitchen with me.  She likes them well enough.  They aren't messy.  That's the reason I will do them instead of a piece of fruit or somesuch.  BLW kids get their pincer quickly if they are food motivated I THINK.  I might be wrong?  Ophelia has a very good pincer now that she really wants to pick up little food bits that have crumbled off her bigger bits ;-}

  • DS's first finger food was Lil Crunchies - which are just like puffs but in the form of a stick (like a cheeto) so it's easier for LO's to pick up.  DS picked them up just fine at 6 months and they dissolve pretty quickly so it's a good first finger food IMO.  I gave those to DS for a couple weeks before offering him actual food as finger foods.

    This. Foods that dissolve instantly are not a requirement at all of BLW as they don't really teach your LO much about how real food works.  Because your LO doesn't need to mash them or move them around in their mouth they don't share the properties most foods have (except cotton candy of course.  Yum!).  They are decent practice for getting small foods to their mouth however but we didn't start with them at all.  M's pincer grip evolved as he'd munch on his stick shapes and eventually get to a small enough piece he still wanted to pick up.  Once he was picking up crumbs we added in cheerios.

  • Puffs are great b/c they help develop fine motor skills.

    I can't remember when we first starting using them.  Probably around 6 mos.  Maybe 7.  They're not messy and we bought the HappyBaby brand w/ veggies so we didn't feel too bad about giving them to DS.  He LOVED them.

  • We did puffs around 6 months- they are like quick dissolving Cheerios (except a little container of puffs costs the same as a large box of Cheerios).  Before the pincer grasp was good, I preferred mum mums to puffs- easier for LOs to handle.
