Baby Names

Divya

we want an indian name  and thought this one was pretty.  i just wanted people's opinion on how difficult it is to pronounce (i grew up with a hard to pronounce indian name, would rather not want my little girl to go through the same)

so Divya should be prounounced dihv-ya with accent on the dihv....this website actually sounds it out  https://www.pronouncenames.com/pronounce/divya

 her nickname would be Divvy (D i v v y, those 2 v's together looked like a "w")

thanks for your help!

  • I love it, probably because I love the character of Divya on Royal Pains.

  • I would pronounce it the way you spelled it out.  I think it's pretty, and I like the nn you suggested!

  • My initial thought is its going to get mispronounced. There are indian names that are pretty and easier to pronounce I think...I did a double take on this.

  • When I used to work at a daycare there were two little girls by this name. I like it and pronounced it correctly.

  • I automatically pronounced this correctly, though I've never heard it before. I don't think you'd have too much trouble though you might hear Dihv-ee-uh fairly often, as that seems the most common way it could be mispronounced.
  • I pronounced it dihv-ya, but I did have to second guess myself. I am predicting many mispronunciations in her life.

This. Along with the fact it is so pretty.

  • I like it, I actually know a woman name Divya

  • Yes, I pronounced it correctly.

As for Divvy, I think the fact that you had to type out the explaination of it being D i v v y should tell you that you might want to consider using a different spelling. Just think of how often your daughter will type out her name in this font throughout her lifetime. haha I realize it sounds kind of silly that, but it's true.

thanks for everyone's thoughts:)  eaglefoot, you have a great point...I spelled it that way cuz i know someone named Olivia that goes by Livvy...maybe we should spell it Divi or Divie....DH suggested Divy, but i think people might pronounce that "Dive-ee"
