TTC after 35

Has anyone else had a miscarriage?

Hi,

I'm a regular on other bump boards, and occasionally lurk here.

Sorry to pop on with such a sad topic, but I just suffered an early miscarriage, which I attribute to my age (41).  I had a successful pregnancy 2 years ago, and am hoping we will have success in the future.

I'm wondering 2 things...can anyone here relate/commisserate?  And, do you know of anyone who has suffered a miscarriage, likely due to their age, and gone on to have a successful pregnancy?  I need hope.

(I was going to post this on Pregnant after 35, but since those women are pregnant I know miscarriage may not be a welcome the topic.)

Thanks!

Re: Has anyone else had a miscarriage?

  • I'm sorry about your m/c.

There are plenty of us who had miscarriages on here. I've had two early miscarriages.  My Dr said they were most likely chromosomal abnormalities (CA).

If it was an early m/c it was probably CAl and not , necessarily.  your age. Most early m/s are due to CA and can happen to anyone at any age regardless of how reproductively healthy they are.

Have you had CD3 testing done to see how your hormone levels are?

I'm sorry for yours, too.  Well, that's what I meant...I'm assuming it was due to chromosomal abnormalities, which I know are more common with older eggs, so a direct result of "advanced" age.  Know what I mean?

Yes, I had hormone testing in February - all was well.

  • I guess I never really thought of CA (I don't feel like typing it out, I'm lazy Embarrassed) being more common with age. I mean, I can see where it would be.

I have a friend (same age as me, 38) who started having kids in her twenties, has five kids now (I can not imagine 5 kids Indifferent...makes me hyperventilate thinking about it) and has had 1-2 m/c between each child (including before her first was born).

Actually most of the people I know who have had m/c were all younger;  I'm one of the oldest on the m/c board by a few years.  While most of my friends who started having kids in their mid-30-late 30's have had zero problem getting pregnant but me.

    I'm not really any help.

I hear you.  I have younger friends who've had miscarriages, too.  I know they are common, regardless of age.  But I also know that 33% of 40+ pregnancies end in m/c, mostly due a rapid decline in egg quality at that age.  It was for that reason that I half-expected it to happen to me, and wasn't terribly upset.  That said, having a child makes a huge difference.  If I were TTC #1 it would have been a much different story.  :(  Here's hoping you have great success soon!!

  • I am 37 and I have had two miscarriages (I was still 36 with both).  The first was really early, a c/p - I may not have even known I was pregnant if we weren't TTC and I was testing early.  They said they assume it was a chromosomal issue b/c as pp said, most early m/c are.

I got pregnant again right away, but sadly I had another m/c.  I was almost 8 weeks that time.  I had the RE test the baby's tissue to see if they could pinpoint a reason.  It was Trisomy 16 - so chromosomal.  Although, Trisomy 16 is actually the most common cause of first trimester miscarriages (per google and my genetic counselor) so I was somewhat relieved to know that it wasn't necessarily age related.

In reality though, being older increases your chances of having chromosome issues.  As my RE said, the older your eggs, the less likely they will do what they are supposed to do - aka - split properly.  It's depressing.  The genetic counselor gave me a paper with the numbers - for my age I have a 1/75 chance there being chromosomal issues mid-pregnancy.  The odds actually improve for a live-birth b/c many don't make it that far along in pregnancy.

That being said, IRL I have known 2 or 3 women who were in their late 30's/early 40's and had a m/c and then went on to have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby - so it is absolutely possible.  And I know plenty of other women in that age range that have had no issues what-so-ever - with getting pregnant or with their pregnancies.  So don't give up hope!!

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  (((hugs)))

I had a m/c in April, it was my first.  I had 2 successful and uneventful PGs before that with no trouble TTC.  I wish I could say that I've gone onto have a successful PG since, but I have not.  Not sure why, timing is good, eggs are good ... but plenty of women get PG shortly after a m/c and for some it takes a little longer.

I'm sorry for your loss and I agree with everything cutebride said.  I had a loss due to Trisomy 16 - and while that isn't necessarily age related - I'm sure my old eggs contributed to the issue.  Since I have less eggs to use, the follicle that was stimulated produced a crappy egg.  My genetic counselor gave me nearly the same numbers cutebride got too.

However there are lots of us on this board that have had m/c's and are still plugging away - undeterred in our efforts to have a(nother) baby - AMA or not.

Again, I'm sorry for you loss.

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  I had a miscarriage at 37, a successful pregnancy at 38, another miscarriage at 39 and I am now 40 and in my third trimester (so it is looking like it will be another successful pregnancy).

I never had testing done to find out why I miscarried.  I believe it was age related.  Good luck and don't give up hope.

  • thanks to all who replied...you give me hope.  :)
