Clicky Poll: Rocker/Glider - Necessity or not?

S/o my post from earlier about the rocking chair I'm looking at, I have a poll for you all (particularly the second- and third-time moms).

How important is it to have a rocking chair or glider in the nursery? I was originally dead-set against having one at all, mostly because we have a tiny home and also because I don't like the look of a lot of the ones that are on the market. (If we don't get one I'd nurse on either the futon in the nursery or the living room sofa). My mom has been really pushing me to get a rocker, saying it's really important for the baby's sake and that I'll regret it if I don't get one.

WDYT?

  • I choose other because it's totally dependent on the baby. Some babies love to be rocked, some are indifferent, and some hate it. You won't know until you rock your baby.

  • It was nice in the beginning when I was up at all hours of the night with the LO, but now I rarely use it.  I might start using it again when I read to my daughter.  So the answer is...hmmmm...sort of?
  • I voted "must - have" because I did not think it was a must- have with DS, and later I really wished I would've had one. I used to rock DS by sitting with one leg off the side of my bed, and rocking my body back and forth myself... that gets way old after not too long at all. This time around I definitely want a rocking chair in the nursery.

  • I'm not sure if it's an "absolute must have", but they're definitely nice.  When I used to babysit, I worked for 2 different families that had them and it was great for feeding.  But I think if you already have a nice comfy chair that you can sit in for feeding, then it may not be necessary.  I would like to get one for our nursery.  If you get a glider, make sure you get one that you can lock in place when not using, though so that when LO gets older and starts crawling and climbing, they won't pinch their fingers in the chair trying to clim up it.

  • I am using one in our nursery, but it came from my sister. She very rarely used it. I don't know if I would be buying one if I didn't have a free hand-me-down from my sister.

  • I got a rocker...(mostly for Daddy who has the total book-reading/rocking chair vision for him and the baby) but I also got a changing table. (Both things I was told were a waste of space/money)

So...chances are I'll rarely use either. Still I got them used, at a yard sale and our nursery is really big so they help it not look so bare.

  • I voted must have, because for us it was.  But every baby is different.
  • I voted nice to have.  No babies of my own yet, but after baby sitting my baby nephew, I would have killed to have one.  He's so heavy I was exhausted walking him around to rock him to sleep.  Just sitting still won't work.  Swaying while sitting helps, but it's hard to do for long periods.

Check out La-z-boy. We just ordered one from there.  It's a rocker/recliner that doesn't look like your traditional overstuff monster. They had some sleeker ones to choose from too, but this was the one that fit DH and I best.  What sold us on it was it wasn't just a nursery piece, it was something we could keep forever (and they do have a transferrable lifetime warranty on everything but the fabric - you could pick one up off the side of the road and they'd fix the frame/mechanism for free).

  • This would probably be better asked in the 3-6 or 6-9 board.

I have a rocker in my nursery for DD, and will be removing it as soon as possible to get ready for baby #2.

We used the rocker (with DD) for about a total of maybe 3 times in her 9 month life. We never ever ever rocked her to sleep. In her first couple weeks, I sat in it with her just because we had it, but we ended up feeding her on the couch in the living room and since we never rocked to sleep, it was definitely a WASTE for us.

But we were given it, didnt pay for it, so you could see if you could borrow it and find out if it works for you.

  • We own a rocking chair. It's been in our living room forever. I'm thinking about moving it upstairs to baby's room, but haven't decided yet. If I didn't already own it, I would not be going out to purchase one for the sake of the baby.

  • LO didnt seem to care if she was being rocked or not but you definetly need some type of chair or couch to sit on.
  • I voted must have....we fed him a lot in the chair (we could have used our couch but itskind of low and its a lot harder getting up and down from a couch than a glider) and we were still using it up till a few months ago (he will be 3 in a month) to sit in and read stories before bed.....it really was a must have for us, and I will be getting a new, mor comfortable one for this baby.  We got a cheap one becasue I wasnt convinved I needed one and it needs replacing now....but all babies/families are different, it was wonderful for us but not neccessarily for everyone.

  • I chose other. I didn't want a rocker or glider. I went with a recliner.  So once I was done breastfeeding, i moved it to the living room.

  • i'd say you could go either way.  i dont know if you'd exactly regret it.   I have one, and i just love it.  i nursed ds in it, i would sit in it all day long because it was in the living room.  ds still likes to sit in it and rock and read a book with me.  i also did just sit on the couch at times as well and nurse him.

but as a previous poster said it depends on the child as well.  my SIL had borrowed one when she had her dd.  and she was glad she borrowed it and didnt buy one just because her dd hated being rocked.  she used it maybe 5 times and then gave it back to her friend.

  • I voted that it was a Must! I still use it to this day with DS. When he has a rough night or gets sick. He always asks me to "Rockie rock" him. I'm so glad we spent the money and got a nice one too! DS is 2 and it still gets weekly use! It will be moved over to the new babies room when it's here!

For the life of me I cannot figure out why people feel you have to have this. I never had one and did just fine. But then again I am one of the few people that is of the belief that is you start habits like rocking babies etc you will always have to do this so I don't.

  • I voted must have.  I didn't have one at first with DD but got one when she was about 6mos old.  I got a stuffed rocker/recliner.  I still rock her in it and use if for cuddle time before bed.  We also read her her bedtime stories in it each night.  I can see using it for many years to come.  It is not your typical "rocker" as it is upholstered and can probably go well in any living room. I plan on getting another one like it for #2 (thinkking I may check out Lazy Boy).

  • I wish I could get a rocking chair or glider, but we just don't have the room for it. Our house is 600 sq feet! I had to choose between a bureau and a glider in the nursery, and I had to go with the bureau.

I'll be using the recliner instead, which thankfully has a rocking feature built into it.

  • I think it is a must. But I am also thinking about long term use. I will be breast feeding and i think it will be a comfortable place to nurse. Plus it will be away from noise and distractions at bed time.
