Baby Names

Is it ready for a comeback?

Recently, I find myself really loving the name Diana. My questions are...

*Do you think it's ready for a comeback, or should I stick with it just as a possible MN?

*Does it remind you too much of Princess Diana? Is that a bad thing?

*If used as a first name, what MN's do you like with it?

I always think of it under the category of normal, but not over used, but I am eager to hear other peoples opinions. Thanks!

Re: Is it ready for a comeback?

  • I love it, and it's definitely underused. I think people will get the association with Princess Di, but that's not a bad thing at all. It's my BFF's name (she's 25). She doesn't actually have a mn at all, so I don't have a good example to give you. But I think a name that doesn't end in an -a would be good.

  • I don't think there is any reason not to use it, but wouldn't use it personally. I don't like that it gets shortened to "Di," which is essentially die. But I do like that while all the other --anna names are continuously popular, this one is not very popular at the moment.
  • I actually really like Diana. I think it's a beautiful name and I also don't think it is one that will become super popular anytime soon (which is a good thing IMO)

  • It seems kind of old to me... but old names are all coming back, and Diana isn't terrible or anything. I think it could be ready for a comeback!

  • I think its a very nice name, traditional, yet not overused.

This name also reminds me of Diana (the Roman goddess) which would also be Artemis the Greek version.

I dont think there would be a very strong tie to Princess Diana, it has been a while since that tragedy. Also I do not like the possibility of the "Di" nickname either.

Some Middle names I like are

    Diana Joelle

    Diana Justine

    Diana Ivy

    Diana Scarlett

    Diana Michelle

    Diana Lynn

    Diana Lauren

    Good luck !! :-)

  • It's not overused and a good solid name, so go for it!

Possible middle names: Lynn, Marie, Christine, Elizabeth (Beth).

  • I think Diana is a beautiful name, worthy of a comeback!

The only thing that might worry me is "Dirty Diana" (MJ song)

  • When did it go out of style?  I've had a few students at the junior high I teach at with the name Diana or Diane (although spelled Dyan).

  • I like it a lot and would consider using it for a girl!  I wouldn't think of Princess Diana right away...i guess because it's common enough that I've heard it on other people.  I also think of the Greek myth with Diana.  Good name!

  • Oh yeah, I just want to add that I read a PP who said that it's the Roman myth with Diana...sorry to say it was Greek!

Also, my mom's name is Diane and she's never been called Di by anyone before!!  So I wouldn't worry about that being a nn people would automatically use.

Actually The Greek ARTEMIS is equivelant to the Roman Diana... :-)

  • My first thought was of one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met named Dinah. Okay, so I know that is a completely different name, but that was my first thought. :) I definitely didn't think Princess Diana.

    I like Diana Lauren!

ETA: Wow! Did you realize that this name was #165 on the SSA list last year? I would have never guessed it was that high. I was actually going to be surprised if it was in the top 500!

  • Yes, it's ready - it's a classic though, so I'm not sure exactly how much it was out.

First I think of Diana Barry from Anne of Green Gables. I think of Princess Diana as Princess Di so much that I didn't make the connection right away. I was in my senior year of HS when that happened. Anyway, I love it. The meaning is lovely, the numbers look good (it's actually losing popularity), and the spelling is spot on.

You've probably heard me say it, but middle names are too personal for me to just pick one for someone else, and I really don't have any suggestions beyond the usual suspects.

  • I like Diana, but like pps, I would try to avoid having anyone refer to her as Di.

  • I first think of a girl I went to hs with that I recently found on fb. yay fb! Anyway I think it is a great, classic name, that also has a royal connection, which isn't so bad.

  • Really pretty name!  It gets my vote!!

By the time your baby Diana is old enough, people definately wouldn't associate her with Princess Diana- although, she was a great woman, so it would be a nice association.

And as far as Dirty Diana, no kids her age will even know that song.   So no worries there either.

Go for it, it is a great name!

  • It's my middle name and I really like it;)

     Go for it!
