Question for beach vacationers

We are headed to the beach for a vacation with family in a couple weeks and we are trying to decide to get a beach tent just some umbrellas.  The twins will be 9 months and we probably will go to the beach in the mornings for an hour or so after their morning nap and then back in the late afternoon.  Right now everything goes in their mouth so that should be a great time trying to keep them from eating sand all day.  We plan to bring lots of old sheets to try to at least keep them somewhat off the sand but I am thinking that if we have a large tent, then it would have a floor in it to help with the sand and automatic shade as well.

All recommendations for making it more enjoyable and less stressful are definitely welcome!

Re: Question for beach vacationers

  • I don't have experience yet but my parents have a place at the beach and when we were up there last weekend it seemed like everyone with young children had some kind of tent. They seemed to work great! They have big ones or the smaller round ones, but they all were perfect for naps and keeping the kids contained with their toys. The shade part of it is great, I was jealous! We are going to buy one at the end of the summer to have for next year. Have fun at the beach!

  • When we go on a beach trip with all of our friends and LOs we always bring a small inflatable baby pool.  You blow it up while you are there, cover with an umbrella, and fill with a small amount of ocean water with buckets.  They love to splash around in it and it keeps them somewhat out of the sand.

  • Do they use pacifiers? That's what we did at that age for Noah and he didn't put any sand in his mouth. Only downside is accidentally dropping the paci in the sand. Yuck.

They usually just use their pacifiers during the night but maybe we will give that a try.  Thanks for the idea.

  • We've go and always use a small beach tent, its open on one end. The reason we like it vs. an umbrella is it locks the wind. Nothing is worse than a really windy day at the beach with no relief from the wind. hth!

i've been thinking about getting a tent, so we can take girls to the beach for the afternoon and have them nap there...  hoping someone will rec theirs!

as far as sand in the mouth... i wouldn't worry about that.  they WILL manage to get sand in their mouthes if they want to, and will be fine!  if you've been super careful about germs and dirt up till now (i was VERY careful) they are getting to the age when you can let go a little.

my friends who are at the beach all the time (lucky her with kids will nap ANYWHERE)...her oldest loved to eat sand when he was just shy of 1yr.  so, there might be sand in his poop. :)  no biggie.

I have also seen people take small inflatable baby pools.  I guess they fill it up with water from the ocean using a bucket and making several trips.  Not sure of the reasoning but it could be helpful to let them play in the water but not worry about the waves hitting them.  ??

The tent is a good idea as well.  When we go we always sit under the pier so we have shade.  My kids are also bigger and we only go 1x year for 1-2 days.  (we go visit my uncle who lives near the beach)

  • We haven't done this yet, but I'm imagining that a Super Yard thing (a.k.a. baby corral) would work, if you set it up on top of a big sheet.  Although that'd kind of take the fun out of the beach.  But I'd worry about sand, too.
