Ketones?

Hey GD gals, wondering if you have been testing ketones and how your levels have been.  I have been testing for a week and have been usually small to medium, this morning I tested high.  Waiting to hear back from my diabetes nurse and I am sure she said that if its high to go the hospital but the nurse at the hospital said that if your sugar levels are fine then not to worry about the ketones, if thats true why do I even check them?!  Just wondering what everyone else has been told about their ketones?  TIA

Re: Ketones?

  • My doc  has never had me test them. When I asked why, he said that if my sugars were ok that there wasn't any reason.

  • The doctor never required it, but my diabetic team did. For the first week after my diagnosis, I had to test daily. If the ketones were in trace to low (which they were), I could back off to once a week. I've never had them bounce into even low amounts, always trace. However, I was told that if I had two days running of moderate to high, that I would need to call my OB and talk to them about what to do. Happily enough, it hasn't gotten to that point yet.

Your body will excrete ketones if you're beginning to metabolize fats instead of the food you're ingesting - kind of like a starvation/preservation mechanism. It could mean that your diet's out of whack. I would suggest talking to your OB and see what they say about the ketones.

  • It means your not eating enough calories and may be dehydrated. Take another look at your diet and drink  lots of water

I test for ketones and mine are always negative. However, if they are elevated it means that you're not eating enough protein.  The advice from my endo and CDE is to increase the protein in my bedtime snack.
