Re: Food Sensitivity Check In
So for 5 days or so I cut out all top 8 allergens and corn. I've reintroduced corn, and it seems to be going well so far (yay!) Today is day 3 of corn, so I think I'm ready to try another (is that enough time in between?). I want to challenge wheat next so I can make some homemade bread, and egg after that so I can have pasta.
I'm getting pretty overloaded; I'm so used to being able to just grab a snack, or stop and pick up dinner that this whole if-I-don't-cook-it-I-don't-eat-it thing is hard. I never liked cooking because I'm not patient enough, lol. If I get hungry I want to be able to just eat; I don't like having to work for it!
We're going out of town this weekend to attend a wedding, and I'm nervous because I can't go out to eat. I'm going grocery shopping when we get there, and I was going to bring my mini George Foreman so I can grill in my hotel room. What does everyone do for trips?
I do the same thing when we go out of town, meal plan and bring my own. Luckily most of our out of town trips are to visit my family and they make sure to have a few of our staples on hand and we plan in advance what we will be eating.
I would not trust any food at the wedding. Eat before, bring a snack, and eat afterwards.
We went to the grand opening of our friend's gourmet cheese shop this weekend. They carry a great selection of specialty foods so I didn't miss the cheese and was able to buy a few things to support their store. I am more excited than I should be about a pack of hand dyed artisnal rainbow stripe pasta that I picked up.
On a vent note, I posted a few days ago about DD's increasngly pinchy latch. She's teething and it is really starting to hurt. I find myself shortening the time of her nursing sessions because of it. I really want to get her to 2 w/ BM as her primary milk or let her self wean but I may have to reconsider if this gets any worse. I was relieved to pump at the office after a weekend with miss sharp teeth.
we have comparatively few restrictions, so we can usually fend pretty well if we'll have access to a frig when we travel. we haven't traveled much since sprout though, so we'll just have to see how that evolves. DH is also gluten-free, and he travels a lot for work. we've found that some certified GF instant oatmeal is a carry-on must have for us. it saves in all crises: you can find someone at a coffee shop in the airport to take pity on you + give you hot water from the espresso machine. you can eat it in your hotel room w/hot water from the coffee pot. etc.
we intro'd some very limited dairy over the last couple of weeks, direct to sprout. i didn't have to eliminate dairy. and now? she doesn't seem to like yogurt! grrr. i was really hoping it could help serve as another calcium/fat/calorie source for her during the day. she's not drinking much EBM at school, and hasn't been overly interested in hemp milk.
I'm very sad because I'm supposed to be having prime rib at the wedding, which I LOVE. I was hoping I could eat just the meat and skip the sides, but I plan on asking what they used to season the meat.
If we don't get a reaction with wheat, I'm going to make a loaf of bread to bring along, and that will hopefully fill everything out.
Hopefully the prime rib will be served from a carving station. I thought I could eat the filet mignon at a wedding I went to as well but it was a sit down dinner and the veggies were swimming in a butter sauce that ran into the filet. The bride had already been so accomodating to ensure we could bring DD to the wedding that I wasn't going to try and get a special plate. Good luck, I hope you can enjoy the prime rib and bringing your own bread is a great idea.
We have a newly discovered Egg allergy in our family. DS ate some Egg Yolk yesterday and hives/red eczema flared up all over the place. We've been wrestling with eczema since he came home and thought the problem was wheat/dairy. Our Pedi thought I was over reacting when I said I believed it was allergies. Sigh.
So I guess I'll join you ladies if you don't mind. We're still wheat free as I feel better without it and now we are egg free as well.
I hope you are all having lovely days and if there are any tips on how to eat breakfast out without eggs that you know please fill me in! I'm supposed to meet friends this week for breakfast and I have no idea what to eat now that I'm down Wheat and Eggs!
Hi - new here, but I've been following the check-ins :-)
I'm Erica, currently avoiding dairy, soy, wheat, egg, peanut, fish, who knows what else haha. DS is 2.5 y/o and had a severe dairy/soy/who knows what else allergy (and I ended up putting him on Alimentum @ 4 months). DD is 3 months and also has the food intolerances. She presents with a LOT of blood in her diapers, but otherwise, no real symptoms. None of the typical GI stuff (no reflux, no colic, sleeps great, happy baby), no skin issues, etc. But LOTS of blood. So I started avoiding dairy/soy and things seemed to get worse. But b/c she's clearly happy and thriving (cough, chunky girl, cough) my docs weren't too concerned. But with my GI's support I decided to eliminate wheat, eggs, peanuts too (I don't eat fish normally so that was a no-brainer). I'm also trying to restrict corn, though not avoiding at this point.
So she FINALLY had a blood free diaper last week (both visible blood and occult blood) so I know that something I cut out was contributing, though I'm not sure what. I guess the plan is to challenge wheat in my diet around 6 months, then maybe egg or something, then soy at 1 year, etc.
So that's my long-winded intro :-) Looking forward to sharing this oh-so-fun experience with you ladies!
I'm meeting with an RD/nutritionist this weekend, hoping to get some suggestions on how to eat more foods since right now I only have a few 'safe' items.
? - Do you find that it is expensive to eat allergen free? I'm lucky to have a holistic food store nearby but MAN, I walk out with 1 bag and spend $40+. I'm trying to hit farmers markets to get fresh fruits/veggies, but it seems to be very expensive, and I'm a SAHM so it's tough.
OK I'll end my novel now, thanks for letting me check in with you...
I'll join you ladies if you don't mind
I posted on Friday that we suspected a milk protein allergy in DS and everyone on this board was super helpful with replying to my post with suggestions.
After a weekend of living dairy free, DS seems to be far less gassy. He still woke himself up some last night due to gas, but it seemed less severe. I'm hoping that the longer I go without dairy the better his nightime wakings might be.
How long did it seem to take before all of your LOs symptoms had been resolved?
Oddly enough I think that I might be feeling a bit better being dairy free...did anyone else find this as well?
waves hand- Hi.
I am currently Dairy/Soy/Wheat/Gluten free. DD had alot of blood in her diapers and takes Zantac for reflux. I haven't really had a hard time avoiding Tree Nuts so I guess I don't eat them either.
I used to love drinking Starbucks Iced Caffe Mochas. I "created" a faux one with Rice Dream and Cocoa powder. It tastes pretty darn real. If anyone is interested let me know.
-DD finally came out of the bloody diapers and got the nice seedy regular looking breastmilk diapers but this week we seem to be super runny like Diahreeha (holy spelling error). Could she just be a runnier pooper? Still some mucous too and I have no idea what I could be eating. I live on chicken, brown rice, olive oil... sigh.
Ugh. So after giving up the Top 8, corn, sesame, garlic, onion, and tomato successfully for nine days, I've decided that I really need to fly across the country with LO to help my mom with my dying father. There goes that diet.
LO's symptoms aren't terrible, they just aren't what they should be. That is great, because there is no way I'll be able to stick to the diet...I'll be in a very rural area with no car and the only stores close by are Walmart and Kroger. Not really good for alternatives to everything.
I know dairy is a problem for LO and thanks to the past 9 days I know corn is too (totally didn't know fructose was corn! It sounds like fruit!!), so I'm going to avoid those as much as possible and see how he does. I'm really hoping those are his only two actual sensitivities and when I get back home I won't have to start all over with the eliminating.
The great thing is that I've already gotten to see how much happier LO is without whatever his allergens are. He spits up a billion times less, and when he does spit up it is the normal milk mixed with saliva stuff (he is teething) instead of curdled smelly ick.
Oh as far as eating out, I seem to have eaten out successfully at Applebees. LO nor I had any problems with our limited allergies, at least.
I had the "Smothered Chicken" with nothing but mushrooms and peppers, with veggies (no seasoning) and a bake potato (with just salt and pepper). The waitress was very nice and helpful, and the food was actually quite tasty, even to be naked of any seasoning.
