What to get a 1-year-old?

Hi all, venturing over here from the local board to get some advice.  I'm going to meet my friend's baby for the first time when we all gather in NY for a wedding in a few weeks.  I missed his first birthday recently and would really like to get him something.  I made him a crochet blanket before he was born so I think doing another craft item might be out.  I'm happy to buy something, but what does one get for a 1-year-old?  Books, clothes?
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Re: What to get a 1-year-old?

  • If I'm not close enough to the little one to know what he/she might need & am not comfortable enough to ask the mother for gift ideas, I give a gift card.

Also... I always LOVE and WELCOME any handmade/crafty items.

  • I love getting crafty/homemade stuff, so if you have the time I think that is a great gift. My one yr old loves play food so if you do felt food that would work, or a kitchen apron or cheff hat. He also loves puzzles, trucks, blocks, and is just gettting old enough for a magnadoodle. His two favorite birthday gifts were the ball popper, and this truck. I hope that helps.

  • Gift cards are good, books are great, I think. I also think an outfit is nice but you should ask what size clothes the mom needs, because she may be set for his current size and looking for a size up.

Toys are great, but definitely ask what type of toys he likes, or that mom wants. For example, some people don't want plastic toys or battery operated toys.  I think music toys are nice for a one year old. I am going to get my baby a drum and a xylophone for her birthday.

Melissa and Doug puzzles are nice too.

  • Books are a good choice typically.

Also if you want to be a bit unconventional, but provide hours of hilarious entertainment, go to the dollar store and get 2-3 pool noodles. They're NOT for swimming. They're for play-time. You can sword fight, make bridges, all sorts of imaginative play stuff. Plus if you get bopped on the head, don't hurt ;p

  • Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies!
