Can anyone in the St. Paul area....

give me a straight and to the point overall "what is this area like" on Bates Ave?

ds' dad just moved into an apt there and I need to find out what the area is REALLY like because what I'm finding out online is NOT what I needed to read.

Re: Can anyone in the St. Paul area....

  • I won't lie.  It is not great.  I grew up about 5 blocks from there.

FYI - I would delete the address from your post, I wouldn't want any lurking crazies to know where my child will be staying.

  • Yuck.  Well it doesn't sound like there is much you can do.  Does your ds' dad know the area or is he open to moving?   I don't get the impression there is necessarily a huge worry about drive by shootings, but there is a lot of instability and crime.  My friend lived on Bush Ave (due north about 9 blocks) and it was not good.  I think he was robbed twice.  It really sucked because he didn't have a lot of money and it took many bitter years to rebuy his stuff.
  • Yeah, not the greatest area, but, having lived near DeSoto and Bush for 10+ years (we don't live there anymore) I never had any direct problems. Well...except the time a SWAT team broke into my house when DH and I were at work to use my roof to attain sniper positions......and I lived on a "good street".

I have a friend who lives near Bates on the Dayton's Bluff side and she's an evening jogger and has never had a single problem from anyone she has met. But she takes as many precautions as she can (mace, cell, avoiding suspicious people and known areas where they congregate on her runs, etc) to avoid a problem.

If he can't move, I would ask your son's father to never let him out alone or after dark when he's older and to be wary of groups of people (in my experience where the majority of problems occur) and to be vigilant about locking up at night. Don't be flashy about new purchases (i.e., leaving boxes out for the garbage, blasting a sound system). Just be cautious in general, keep your head down and have the non-emergency police number handy. Sorry.

  • I lived somewhat by SuchaPayne a few years ago - I lived off old Hudson Road in Dayton's Bluff. I was training for the TC Marathon and would run all over the area (including down by the river and Shepard's road) as well on 3rd Avenue toward White Bear Avenue on longer 8+ mile runs. I never had a problem living there. And I still love the area (now I live by Como Park, over 5 years and only recently, heard about some man flashing someone at the lake at 5:15AM).

I agree what she said - just be cautious. Can all areas, even nice suburbs have issues? Absolutely. Does the East side have a tendency to have a few more issues? Yes. Is it a reason not to let your child go there? No. Just be aware, have your husband's dad be aware, and not alone after dark. I was a mid-20s female living with another girlfriend and we never found problems. Don't be turned off by the area, but don't let your hubby's father become naive about the neighborhood-especially if he hasn't been living there long.

  • I have friends that live on Bates (sorry originally put wrong street). Their neighborhood is perfectly fine.
