Getting a 10 month old to eat solid foods

W will only eat purees, baby puff or baby cheetos.  He refuses to eat any sort of fruit, veggie, meat or anything that isn't pureed.  We can't feed him purees forever, and he should start eating big people food soon.  If, on the off-chance, he does open his mouth for it, it gets spit right back out as soon as he realizes he has to chew it.  Any advice?

  • Put things in front of him that he can pick up.  Throw some cheerios and some little banana pieces on his tray and let him pick them up.  Start using thicker oatmeals and such that he has to work to eat but doesn't have to chew.  He'll start to move on to other things.  He may have texture issues.  My youngest refuses to eat grits.  He hates them, but he loves oatmeal.

  • He will eat grits and oatmeal and whatnot.  He'll even eat oatmeal with chunks of banana in it but if I put it in front of him, he'll just play with it and throw it.  We just cut up a banana and put it in front of him and he smashed it all over his highchair and wouldn't eat any of it.  We've tried it with chicken, vegetables, fruits, etc and he just throws it on the floor.
  • Maybe he just isnt' ready yet.  I would keep trying here and there.  If y'all are having peas, throw a few on the try and see what he does.  If you have some watermellow, throw a couple little pieces up there and see what he does.  He'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

Ditto the thought that he may not be ready.  My son gagged every time I put anything textured in his mouth until he was 13 months old.  I was sick about it, assuming that I was doing something wrong.  I wasn't, though, he just wasn't ready for solids yet.  Keep trying, but don't beat yourself up if he's not interested yet.
  • Sounds like to me he is just not ready.  Why push it?  He has his whole life ahead of him to eat solid foods.  DS did not really start to eat solids until after his first birthday.  Up until that point, eating solids is just for practice anyhow.  I wouldn't stress over it and he will come around when he is good and ready.

  • DS1 had an extremely sensitive gag reflex and he would not eat chunky or thick food at all.  He would gag and typically throw it up which made me very nervous to give him that kind of food.  He qualified for EI which helped him AND me and now he doesn't have any issues.  Not sure when he outgrew it but it was after he was a year old (he started EI at just around a year old).  The main advice I can give you is to just keep trying.  It may take awhile but just go at his pace.  He'll eat foods with more texture eventually.

  • My DS would also eat the baby cheetos so I started cutting everything into small sticks like the cheetos. It helped him pick them up.  If its a problem with the texture though, I don't know what to suggest.  Hmm I also give him shredded cheese that is kinda long and stick like.  Oh and I put these things on the tray at the same time as the cheetos.  Sometimes he eats the cheetos first but he does mix it up some end eventually eats everything.  GL

  • It seems the only things he's interested in that we eat are cheese, yogurt, things with cheese, etc.  He has a milk protein allergy that makes his eczema explode though, so we can't give him that.  He could care less about the meat, fruits or veggies that we eat.

Have you tried him on soy cheese?
  • What exactly has you concerned?

Is he not eating at all or just not eating solids? He's only 10 months - no need to get worked up about it just yet. Just keep working at it, and you might want to be consistent with a food that he likes.

Babies also like to feed OTHER people which can lead to them feeding themself. I.E. Give daddy a cheerio YUMMY! Now you eat one!! Good Job!! Try making it a game for him.

Good luck - but no need to worry about it. Eventually he'll pick it up.

He'll eat formula and purees, just no finger foods or anything he has to chew.  I guess I'm worried that it's a texture thing, which he would have gotten from me.  I was and am an extremely picky eater and it was really hard on me growing up.  I couldn't ever go to a friend's house for dinner because I most likely wouldn't eat what they were having.  I just don't want that for him I guess.  I'm overreacting, I know.

We've tried having him feed us, and it never turns into him eating.  He will feed us all day long but as soon as we try to get him to eat one, he freaks out.

  • Again I'd say relax he just isn't ready yet, and if he's picky (like my DS2) you'll find ways to deal with it... i.e. telling the parents of the friends who want him over for dinner that he's a picky eater. Let them know a couple of things he WILL eat so you don't have to worry.

    It will be okay... :-)

  • Thanks :)

I kind of knew that I'm overreacting, I just needed someone else to tell me that it was all going to work out.  I hope that he isn't picky, but I guess I can't really change it if he is.

  • My son just started finger food a few weeks ago. He would gag and throw up everytime we gave him something. We are just giving him what he wants and if he doesnt eat it, we will feed him pureed food after. I was worried to, but the doc said it will just take time.  We had to break cherrios in half, it was that bad.  Good luck with it! C LOVES the shredded cheese, so I second trying a soy cheese!
  • I made baked ziti tonight and he ate a bunch of it!  He even really liked the meat!  Yay!!
  • WONDERFUL! Yay lil man!
