Baby Names

I need girl name help

DH and I are really struggling with naming our baby girl.  We were set on a first name and then changed our mind.  Here is our list right now (also, our ds is named Hudson):

Finley Joy

Madeline Joy

Emma ?? (we don't like Joy with this one)

Hadley Joy

That is it.  We have nixed so many names I can't even tell you.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  I was sure we would have a name by now!  I thought boy names were hard when we were pregnant with DS and we came up with his pretty quickly. Thanks!

Re: I need girl name help

  • Love Madeline, but prefer the spelling Madeleine :)

Emma feels a little overdone lately.

Finley is cute but it sounds more masculine to me?  Hadley also sounds really masculine.  If someone just told me those names I would assume you have a son.

Madeline is much more feminine.  Madeline & Emma are such different styles compared to Finley and Hadley.  It is interesting that you like all of these.

  • I love Finley! What a great name! Emma and Madeline are pretty- but very common.  Hadley sounds a little akward (sp?) to me- like I can't picture it "fitting" anyone.  If that makes sense...

  • Just wanted to add....I might be thinking finley sounds masculine because of the nickname Finn being a strong boy name that I see on the rise in popularity.  I don't actually know for sure whether Finley is being used on boys, but I definitely think it sounds very masculine or at he least androgynous.

Really like Madeleine though...we were debating using it as a name as well. It is very popular though right now.  But still classic and strong.

You do have several different styles going on here, which is not a bad thing, but interesting.

  • I think Finley sounds really masculine, just cuz of the possible nn of Finn.  Hadley is ok, but I agree with a pp, just doesn't seem like it would fit anyone.  Emma is too common for me.  Madeline is pretty common, too, but I like it the best out of your names.

And I'm with ya on choosing names.  We cannot agree on anything, and I thought we would have by now!

  • I really like Finley, and I like the use of Joy as a middle name.

  • I agree- Finley sounds masucline, Emma & Madeline are overdone and I don't care for Hadley at all. What about:

Farrah (I think Farrah Joy is pretty!) or Sabrina, Magnolia (Maggie) or Lucia (Lucy)? I like all of those with your DS's name.

  • I'm partial to Madelyn. :)

  • Finley is a traditional Irish male name, which is why it sounds masculine. I hate it for girls.

Madelyn is my 94 year old grandma's name, and I love that.

  • I like Madeline Joy and Emma. The other names seem a little too trendy sounding and will probably end up sounding very dated over time.

    Mn's suggestions for Emma:

    Jane, Rae, Charlotte, Chloe

  • I really like Madeline, but I would prefer to spell it Madelyn, assuming that's how you want to pronounce it. Some people like Madeleine, which I think is pronounced differently.
  • Finley IMO is definitely a boys name.  I love Madeline and Emma.  I personally like Emmalee (all 1 word)

Finley was our choice for a girl, so I'd have to say that's my favorite in your list. I also love Madeline.

Emma is pretty, but seems quite popular (if that's even something that would bother you).

Hadley is ok, but sounds a bit harsh to me.

ETA: Finley is technically a boy name, but in the U.S. is more common for a girl.

  • Madeline is my favorite from your list (with the 'line' pronunciation, not 'lynn'). Emma is okay too (though I prefer Emily).

Hadley and Finley are nms at all.

Eh, it is still a boys name, and will also sound like a boys name to me. And clearly to many of the other posters in this post.

  • From your list I love Finley. Madeline and Emma are WAY over used. I really don't know why people like Hadley. All that comes to my mind is 'been had'.
  • I like Finley, but I'm not crazy about Joy..

  • Love Finley and Hadley. FYI, if anyone wants to know what one (Hadley Kate) looks like, check out my siggie below!

To me, Emma and Madeline are way overdone. But just my opinion. They are still pretty names.
