Babies: 3 - 6 Months

what age did you pedi say for rice cereal?

Our pedi says 6 months but I feel like her recomendations are always on the very very conservative side so I am wondering if this is another one....or do all pedi's say 6 months?

Re: what age did you pedi say for rice cereal?

  • When we lived in WI and had a different pedi for my DD#1 he said 6 months. Our new pedi said 4 months is fine, but we're probably going to be waiting until 6 months.

  • We were told 5 months.
  • 4 months and we started her at 4 months.  She seems to like it.

  • MIne said anytime between 4 and six months is fine.  We tried it this week just to see how it would go, and he's not ready yet.  I think the babies let you know when they are ready.
  • Is your child BF or FF?

If BFing, recommendations are to wait until 6 months.

If FFing, the recommended age is a bit earlier, based on how much your child eats. For example, we will likely have to start solids next month, a month prior to what we were hoping for, because the little guy eats too much formula, and could end up with something called formula toxicity.

The best way to know if your child is ready for solid food is to try it, though. Test it for a few days, and see if LO gets the hang of it.

  • Our pedi said he would prefer to wait till atleast 4 months but since DD was having a food issue he said it would be okay to start a week or so early.  She has been getting one 6oz bottle with rice cereal a day since so it worked out for us!

  • 4 months for FF and 6 months for BF.

But he said we could start earlier if she seems interested in food.  We will probably pass on the rice cereal and go for oatmeal or barley.  Rice causes constipation.

  • Our pedi says between 4 and 6, depending on LO's needs and our preference.

I have a FF baby and he drinks 6 ounces every 3-4 hours.

This is where DS was when pedi said to start cereal at his 4 month appt.  He was not into rice cereal at all, but was showing all of the signs being ready to eat.  She told us to switch to oatmeal and to start adding fruit/veggie to the cereal.  He loves it now!

  • Pedi says her weight gain is good so I can continue to BF her; no need to start solids. (She's 4 months old). I think 6 months is the earliest she recommends starting solids.
