NBR : Getting rid of cable

So I am going back to work part time this school year and to save some money my dh and I are thinking about getting rid of our direct tv and just watching tv with an antenna, internet and netflix. This is huge for me since I LOVE TV! But it was actually my idea anywho  has anyone done this? How did it go? TIA

Re: NBR : Getting rid of cable

  • We have thought about it, but never gone through with it.  I find that I really don't watch too much TV these days.  And when it is on, it is usually just background noise. I alos think that the internet makes it so  easy to see shows these days that it is probably a pretty easy transition.

We did it and are SO HAPPY we did! It's been over 2 years now. We have an antenna ($12) w/ digital converter box (free from my BIL), and get 3 discs at a time from Netflix ($18/mo).

We used to watch quite a bit of TV and my H in particular loved TV. But we have never regretted it for one second, in fact every now and then one of us will comment on how glad we are for not wasting that $ anymore. We watch everything we want to see on DVD (you can also stream some shows from Netflix for free, and if you have an Xbox or PS3 or Wii you can watch on your TV!).

DH's job now has him traveling and when he's at a motel he'll watch cable TV... he can't help watching but says it's all a bunch of crappy shows and he doesn't miss it at home.

  • We didn't have cable for months when we moved into our house before DD was born.  We got it right before she was born because I wanted to be able to watch TV during night feedings (where we were living, you had to have cable to get any TV at all, which was annoying).  The months that we didn't have TV were great.  We found that we didn't really miss it.  And then once we did get cable, I was annoyed because there was never anything on TV.  At 3 a.m. when I was feeding DD, most channels had paid programming.  Hello - it's CABLE and I'm PAYING for it, so why are you airing paid programming?

But I digress.  I think you won't miss it as much as you think you will.  And you can always rent seasons of TV shows or watch them through Hulu.  That's what we do now that we're overseas, and it's not bad.

Traveling the world with my girls - born 12 months and 18 days apart.
