Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO say their first word beside mama?

Just wondering.. I was looking at a speech and language milestone chart and Max just knows mama (for both DH and I). The chart says he should know 2-3 more words by one! His birthday is coming up and I'm not quite sure if he's anywhere close. I know I'm being paranoid, but just want some feedback.

TIA!

Re: When did your LO say their first word beside mama?

  • He said Daddy first, then Mommy and he can also say 'this' when he points to something.

He will be 1 in a week and a half (OMG OMG OMG).

  •  I'm not even worried about charts at this point. His first "word" was "up," after momma/dadda/baba.  But that wasn't until after he turned one. Now he's only added a couple to that (nana, Hey/Hi). THe boys on my side and DH's take a while to get going so I'm not concerned.
  • DD didn't have 2 or 3 words until 18 months.  And she had those same words until around 21 months, when her language skills just exploded.  Now at 22 months she can repeat just about anything.

  • He started saying baba for bottle at about 9 months. By the time he was 1 he said mama dada this and night night. But my other son didn't say this many words by 1. So I wouldn't worry about it this soon. At the 12 month appt they only asked me if he could say mama and dada.

  • DS still only says, "mamamama" when he's upset. Other then that no words that I can decipher yet. Lots of babbling but no words.
  • DD doesn't say mama but she says daddy, up, uh oh, puppy, wazthat (what's that when she points).  She also knows the sign for more, milk and all finished.

  • Thanks for your responses ladies! I think I just panicked when I saw the list of suggested recommendations, I do all of them and he's not where the chart says he should be. It's hard not to look at those charts, especially since I'm a teacher.

    Many many thanks!

Really, she's a big talker and had a handful of words around 9 months. BUT, her cousin is 3 months older than her (around 16 mo now) and doesn't say much at all. All babies are truly different. I see many posting on her that their 15mo doesn't talk, so I wouldn't worry. :)

  • My LO had a few words at 12 months (mom/dad/up/go/ball), and I remember feeling concerned.  I read a bunch of books on language development and learned that most kids don't hit a true language explosion until they've acquired between 50-100 words (usually between 18-24 months--but not always).  She is 16 months now and has 80 words (self-initiated use of a word, used in several situations).  Right now, your LO is processing information and learning the language...getting ready to try it out!  This is very exciting because you can reaffirm him and build his confidence by responding to each & every effort to communicate.  You will notice that your baby understands a TON and is happy to feel understood--or at least know that you are making an effort to understand him-- that will encourage him to keep communicating--which will turn into talking before you know it.  Your LO is right on track, IMO.

  • I wouldn't worry...DD talks a lot for her age, and said baby at 9 months for her first real word other than momma and dada.  However, she never crawled...she scoots and she is just now taking steps when I have several friends whose babies did the opposite.  They all are different!

This is my son. We are still waiting for his first word but he babbles up a storm.

  • Those milestone charts drive me crazy.  I think your LO sounds right on track.  FWIW, my DD said no words at 12 months, 40 words by 15 months, and by 18 months was speaking in sentences and had hundreds and hundreds of words.  My DS said his first word (bye bye) at 10 months, had about 5 at 12 months, and now at 16 months only has 25 or so.  So, he said more earlier, but gained words less quickly than DD.  They are both well within the bounds of normal.
  • Neither of my boys was saying ANY words that we could definitely "count" until almost 15m. Now at 18m though they're actually ahead; they have about 60 words each. So I definitely wouldn't worry yet!
