uh no. That's my daughter's name and I have never heard of that. The only pronunciation thing that goes with avery is whether you want it two syllables (A-vree) or three syllables (A-ver-y).....that is the only thing I have ever run into and it isn't really a big deal.
I can't say it ever occurred to me that Avery would be mispronounced in that particular way, but one of the reasons I dislike Avery is that it's commonly mispronounced. It's a three syllable name: ay-ver-ee, but most people pronounce it ayv-ree with only two syllables. For that reason, I actually don't mind when people spell it: Avrie/Avrey, etc. It's one of the few names that seems to need a spelling change, at least if you intend not to enunciate. I think the mother in question would have done better to be concerned with that pronunciation problem that a soft or long A sound.
I think very very few would pronounce Avery wrong and be more confused with Ayverie. Also, if spell check gets it wrong, that should tell people something.
Re: would this pronunciation of Avery ever occur to you?

No. Avery is simple and pronounced correctly spelled the way you have it.
