2nd Trimester

anterior placenta!

I'm 18 weeks and every time I go for a sono or check baby's heart beat on doppler it's hard, because my placenta is anterior.  My doctor says it is nothing to worry about and that it will grow up throughout the pregnancy.

I hope at this weeks appointment, it will have moved up...it's making me a little nervous, because I can't really feel the move baby.... except for if I on my right or left side.

For those of you you have or had an anterior placenta did it get better? and were you able to feel the baby move better in the 3 trimester?

I had to wait till 20 weeks to feel movement and now I can feel things all the time. There is hope!

  • I also have an anterior placenta. We have a slightly difficult time finding her h/b at appointments, but it has been easier the past couple of times.

As for movement, I still only feel her a couple of times a day. Hopefully this will get better!! GL!

  • I did not have any definate movement until 22 weeks. Now I feel him everyday. Some days it is lower movement but for the most part I can feel the harder kicks. My OB said that by 28 weeks I should be able to feel him more through the placenta. I have been feeling him move alot more the last week and I can tell he is getting stronger.

  • My anterior placenta schedule:

    18 weeks:  Small, light movement

21 weeks:  Light jabs on the sides

23 weeks:  Strong jabs on the sides

28 weeks:  First time I felt movement on the front

31 weeks:  This baby is trying to escape out my belly button!

  • There is hope!!! Thank you everyone. I guess I have to be more patient.
  • I had anterior placenta with my daughter.  I hardly felt any movement, but they didn't have a hard time hearing her heartbeat at all.  As for "it moving up", that never happened and I've never heard of it happening.  I think when your placenta is anterior, it pretty much stays there.  I could be wrong, but I think you should ask about that again...
  • Yes, it got better. I have an anterior placenta.  I didn't feel movement until 19 weeks.  Now I feel it very clearly on a daily basis.  I  have a doppler at home and can hear the heartbeat within seconds, before I had to really search.  Be patient, it will be okay!

  • I had it with my DD and it was always a struggle to feel her movements...but she was also a very calm baby (both in and out of the womb).  I never tried to do kick counts...it would make me insane.  You will get to know your LO's normal movements and can judge if things are going ok by that.  Later in pg you can feel the larger movements very clearly but DH rarely felt her move. Mine never moved up.

This pregnancy started out with an anterior, went to fundal (top) and is now posterior.  I can feel this DD so much better.

  • Starting feeling movement around 22 weeks, and now at 25 weeks feel him all the time and I think pretty strong! So dont worry about it too much

  • I have an anterior placenta and i didn't really feel much for movement until 22 weeks but once that hit- i feel movement all the time so i think that the baby is either getting really strong or it has moved up.  I'm guessing a lil of both.  I would say just wait a few weeks and you will start feeling movement all the time and you'll forget all about your placenta position.
  • I had an anterior placenta with my first, and movements were always muted for me.  Yes, by the end I could feel him . . . but not the way other talk about it.  Definitely had more trouble getting the heartbeat at times, but the upside was we got some exttra unexpected ultrasounds when that would happen.  I was hoping that I'd have a posterior placenta this time around, but nope.  Anterior again.  Oh well!
  • Besides a few flutters i haven't felt much at all, however, Dr finds the HB right away at each visit.  As for the placenta moving, I wasn't aware that was possible - I think it's stuck where it is until labor but I could be wrong.

  • I had an anterior placenta with DS and I honestly don't remember feeling movement later. But then again, I didn't know what the 'normal' timeframe for feeling movement was at the time. The only way I found out I even had an anterior one was when we went for our 3D u/s the pictures were fuzzy. So, yes, you will feel movement ALL THE TIME soon!!

  • with my first I didn't feel any movement until week 24 and very little after that.  with my second I have anterior placenta again and feel everything.  Try not to worry..I know its hard though.

this is right on point for when I was pg with DD and had an anterior placenta. This time I have an anterior placenta again, but felt movement earlier (I think because I knew what I was feeling). Try not to get frustrated... in time that baby is going to be jabbing so hard you'll be glad it didn't happen sooner Wink

  • i HAD a  right posterior placcenta at my NT and now at my anatomy this past week, it's fundal anterior. Placentas can most definitely migrate. That's why most OBs don't typically worry about previas until 32-34 weeks - they can move.

That said - i didn't feel flutters until almost 19 weeks. Now i feel SOMETHING almost every day. I don't have anything to compare them to, since this is my first, but I do say they are a little "muted" from what I expected. Some days are stronger than others. And the movements on the sides are MUCH stronger than those i feel in the middle.
