Tried gDiapers, no go. I may sell my barely used and never used sets....(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you?
Had a simple one, which was more helpful to get me ready than anything else(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)?Nurse at 6:30 / Pump between 10-11 a.m. / Pump between 1-2 p.m. / Pump between 4-5 p.m. / Bedtime nurse at 7:30-8 p.m. / Final pump before bed at 10-10:30At the office, I put the bottles of freshly pumped milk in the zipped-up black cooler that came with my pump and then put that cooler in the office fridge. When I get home, I transfer the bottles (3) to our fridge. In the morning, I make sure each bottle has the same amount and pack them, along with clean nipples, in a separate cooler bag for DH to take to daycare. I don't transfer the milk to other bottles; she drinks from the bottles I pump into. Fresh milk lasts 5 days in the fridge, so I usually leave Friday's milk in the fridge and use it on Monday. Freezing it takes away some of the nutritional benefits. Back when I had extra milk or before I went back to work, I used to put milk in the Medela freezer bags and put them flat in the deep freezer in the basement. I have a First Years milk storage accordian, but I think that is not necessary... Ziplock freezer bags for each month works just as good. When I use the frozen milk, I put it in the fridge the night before so that it's easier to defrost in the morning. To defrost, I hold it under warm running water, then pour into a bottle. To serve, I then put that bottle into a plastic bowl filled with hot water. Oh, I usually freeze milk in 3 oz and 5 oz increments.

(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 3 months old on the 21st!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? They're getting so good at grabbing stuff! It's amazing what a difference there is in their hand-eye coordination in just a week or two!
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Nope, not really
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? The boys have started getting a bit fussy with their swaddling, but I'm not sure I want to stop using it yet. We don't have central heating so I'm worried about keeping them snug and warm enough without the wrapping, and it's their big cue to go to sleep.
(5) If you (plan to) CD, how did you choose which CD's to use/try? Tips for being successful with CD? Any ?getting started? tips? N/A
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you? I think they're good to have if you have very specific needs/wants that can probably be accommodated. Since my birth plan was basically "play it by ear and do whatever needs to be done to get healthy babies" I didn't even end up pulling mine out of my hospital bag lol!
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)? N/A(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 5mo and some days
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? still sad about DH's granddad. Jack is turning into a total Skype ham when we video chat with the ILs - he "talks," laughs, claps, leans in real close.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? nothing coming up. Either Jack is really healthy, unusually normal or I am "too" laid back - I am the only one of my mom friends that has never called the peds office. Even ones with babies younger than Jack. Hmmm, I guess a lot of their questions seem to me to be parenting choices rather than health questions... no real point to the comment - no way is right or wrong - they all just looked at me like I was nuts when I said I had never called.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? being a single parent for the week. I guess DH helps more than I give him credit for, haha. I know he does a lot and I appreciate it.
(5) If you (plan to) CD, how did you choose which CD's to use/try? Tips for being successful with CD? Any ?getting started? tips? bought a little bit of everything, used prefolds and fitteds for newborn (fav fitteds were green sprouts). Like BGs for daycare (love the BG organic AIO, will buy a few more of those) like prefolds/covers for evenings/weekends, and hemp inserts in a BG or a goodmama+cover overnight. Did not like fuzzi bunz, couldn't ever get the snaps to work right on Jack's skinny little bottom and waist/long rise.
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you? I think my MW practice pretty much required one but preferred you use their provided check list (also had a spot to write things in that were not covered). I appreciated it because it was really easy to get DH to help fill it out and I think the nurses like it b/c they know exactly where to look on the sheet to help make things go smoothly. It was posted right inside the door and no one ever asked about certain things (no drugs offered, no one asked why I didn't have an IV, no one turned on the lights, etc).
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)? pump at 9 or 10 and again at 1 or 2. Jack has started eating 16oz during the day this week so I have added a session at 4:30 to ensure that I get 16-20 oz. (in the car while commuting home, but hey, it works). I pump directly into evenflo 8oz glass bottles and store them in the fridge. Pour into the daycare bottles while DH gets Jack dressed for the day. He gets the previous days milk every day. On Fridays I freeze and Monday's bottles are from the frozen stash mixed in with a little of whatever fresh milk I may have pumped over the weekend.
freeze in 3-5oz increments (I use lansinoh bags and like them, no leaks yet and they are cheaper than medela).
I pump in an empty office at work that was specifically set up to be my pumping room. they provided a small fridge, comfy chair, and small cabinet (that locks) so when I get there in the morning I put my pump (and kindle!) in the cabinet, my cooler (an old insulated lunch sack with an ice pack) in the fridge and leave everything there all day. I put my pump parts in a ziplock and store them in the fridge so that I don't have to worry about washing after each use (just wash at home each night)
hope that makes sense... I remember being so intrigued about how the pumping, toting, and storing would work out. Now it's like second nature. Not sure I will like not having automatic breaks.
**oh yeah, when I'm out of the office at meetings or something I pump in the car w/ the lighter adapter. I like my car b/c it has dark tinted windows, but when I'm in the work prius I just pack my nursing cover.
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)?I work 12 hour shifts. I should add that we're in the process of weaning. She is weaning herself but I'm also not trying to force the issue...Our current schedule is: Feed B when she wakes up (usually around 530am), go to work at 6:30, pump at 9, 1, 6 and then leave work at 7:30... if she's up (which she RARELY is) then I nurse her. It was SO hard to pump as much as I needed too but you just have to make time for it if you really want to be successful at nursing and giving your baby BM. As far as storing, freeze the bags FLAT! No one told me that at first and then I had a bunch of odd shaped bags that were difficult to store. We store our bags in shoe boxes by month in a deep freeze. Bella refused the bottle for awhile at daycare so we still have a lot of frozen BM to use! (8) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?
TTCers: Which cycle are you on? Where in the cycle are you? What, if anything, are you doing/trying for TTC success? We're TTC again! This is cycle #2 since my m/c in late April. We started trying in June. It's hard to tell when I'm cycling though since I'm not having a period. As for TTC success, practice makes perfect so we've done a lot of practicing! Lisa, any tips for remaining calm after a m/c? I'm so nervous that once I get my BFP that I won't want to tell anyone and that I'll be a nervous wreck!
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 26 weeks today!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
It's been a challenging several weeks, but I'm slowly beginning to feel like myself again. I'm trying really hard to focus on all the positive things we'll be experiencing as we enter the 3rd tri and get closer and closer to LO's arrival.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
I just had a regular check-up on Wednesday. Everything looks good so far. My next appt is in 2 weeks...the dreaded glucose screening test. I'm thinking it won't be too bad. I'll just need to find something to occupy my time for 1 hour while I wait to have my blood drawn. ETA: Almost forgot that we're interviewing our 1st (and only, so far) pediatrician today!
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
Nothing I can think of other than trying to stay positive and remembering to take care of myself. I've been having increased lower back pain and hip pain while I sleep. Oh, and I've been peeing a lot! I notice we go through a lot more toilet paper at home these days.
(5) If you (plan to) CD, how did you choose which CD's to use/try? Tips for being successful with CD? Any ?getting started? tips?
We wanted to keep it cheap and simple so we've decided to start out with prefolds, several Size 1 Thirsties Duo Wraps, a couple of Size 1 Duo Diapers and some hemp inserts for added absorbancy. We'll see how we do with our current stash and adjust from there, if needed.
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you?
I'm interested to see how others respond. I think I have a fuzzy idea of what we would like, but I'm also open to deviating from our birth wishes, if necessary.
I'm a little tired to post answers to all the questions just now, but I'd love it if you could change me to:
lelekay - Henry Benjamin - 07.22.10
Thank you!
Done! Congrats again, Leah!!!
I was terrified when I got my second BFP - happy, but absolutely, 100% terrified. When I went to see my doctor to tell her I'd gotten a positive test, I ended up having an emotional breakdown in her office.
But...the mantra of the TTCAL board is "my desire for a baby is greater than my fear" - and it's SO true. It really is nerve wrecking, but at the same time it's the greatest joy.
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? been feeling good, except i must have accidentally put on my crankypants this morning. been in a really bad/easily annoyed mood all day! is it saturday yet?
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? in a week and a half, regular appointment
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? No complaints this week!
(5) If you (plan to) CD, how did you choose which CD's to use/try? Tips for being successful with CD? Any ?getting started? tips? I read a LOT about CDs. Seriously - hours upon hours upon hours. Even after deciding on PF's and thirsties covers, i'm *still* reading about CD's! see my earlier post about being obsessed, hah.
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you? I'll have a simple one, but mostly just want to go with the flow and not overplan. There was a form in a big booklet from my MW, so I'll probably just use that, and add whatever I feel is missing, if anything. Will be taking notes from you ladies!
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)? We actually have a symphony pump in the mothers' room at work, and a fridge. Not sure what my schedule will be like, of course! I'm lucky that my company is very mom-friendly.My company is also very mom friendly. We have a lactation room with a mini-fridge just for breastmilk. It's made things so much easier to have my own space to pump... I can't imagine pumping in a storage room or the bathroom like some moms do!
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
She'll be 6 months old tomorrow!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Excited about applying for an MBA...hopefully I get in for fall, but if not, I'll try again for spring admission. A little nervous that I am taking too much on with a young baby and a full-time job, but I have been reassured that I can do it (my mom and DH are super supportive of the move)...and this way I won't have to delay my plans of TTC#2 next summer or early fall.
Libby's developing like crazy...scooting on her bottom to get to things she wants to touch and babbling using consonants now. She's |thisclose| to saying "mama."
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
We both have routine appointments in August.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
Getting Libby back on a normal bedtime routine...for about a week she was really fussy, wakeful and not sleeping well at all. For the past four nights she's nursed at 8 p.m., gone down at 8:30 p.m., nurses again at 4:30 a.m. and is back down until 9 a.m.! Hooray!
(5) If you (plan to) CD, how did you choose which CD's to use/try? Tips for being successful with CD? Any ?getting started? tips?
We've been CDing since she was 6 days old. We went with the budget-friendly approach of prefolds and Thirsties covers. Simple, cheap and easy! We used a Snappi untl she was about 8 weeks old and then just the covers to keep the PFs on since the Snappi seemed to squeeze her tummy too much. I did a lot of research and made my choices based upon ease and budget. We did get some Thirsties Duo Diapers (pockets) for overnights and have never had a leak! We add an additional hemp insert (also Thirsties brand) and she's good to go. No need to unstuff them either since their open ended on both sides and the washer agitates them right out! Super easy and very effective (she's a heavy wetter).
Next baby we might just CD from the start...bringing them to the hospital with us. We shall see. I think it's cool that some hospitals use CDs, I wish mine did.
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you?
It was very important to me and despite not being able to use a lot of it because of my need to be induced, I am glad I had one...it helped me discuss what was important to me and my DH with our OB. They honored a lot of it and of course, it's just one's wishes, in the moment you have to go with what's safest for you and your baby. The nurses referred to it and I was especially happy to have the post-birth and post-partum section since, despite being induced, they could still honor those requests.
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)?
I nurse her ("dream feed") around 4:30 or 5 a.m. and then get up for the day. I am at the office at 7 a.m. and pump around 9:30-10 a.m. I have excess lipase so I have to scald my expressed milk before storing (so it won't taste "off") which is an extra step, but thankfully we have a stove at my office, so it's easy to do. Once I've heat-treated the milk it goes into clean bottles (not the ones I pumped in), and place them in the black insulated case that came with my pump (with the ice pack) into the fridge at work. I pump in my own office (it has a door) and set up a little pumping station at my credenza (my back is to the door, just in case someone comes in although I have a big sign on the door that says "Milk Maid in Session, Privacy Please...10 minutes" I work with all women, so it wouldn't be awful, but still, most of them have never BF'd let alone pumped so it would be akward.
I go home for lunch at 11:45 (it's a 10-15 minute drive) and take this milk with me. It's transferred into 8 oz. glass storage bottles and goes into our fridge. I nurse her at lunchtime and am back at the office from 12:45-3:30 p.m. and then home for the day. So I only pump once a day. If I have a meeting or have to be at the office longer I pump again at 3-3:30 p.m.
One bottle of 8 oz. milk can last Libby about 2-2.5 days since she'll only take milk by cup (2-3 oz.) around 10 a.m. on weekdays. She gets the fresh milk by cup. So, I have A LOT of extra milk. I freeze them in 1 oz. "sticks" using a Sensible Lines Milk Trays and then they go into label ziploc freezer bags in batches by two week time frames. They are stored in the middle of the freezer, not touching the sides of the freezer. I might donate the excess since I cannot imagine ever needing as huge a stash as I currently have!
Same here...and I couldn't agree more about parenting choices vs. health choices. I think pedis shouldn't offering parenting advice unless they've been asked for it! My BFF has a 23 month old son who still nurses (maybe once a day, mostly for comfort) and just had a new son born last week. The pedi told her that she HAS to stop nursing the older son. WTF? She was beside herself.
I sent her a TON of info. on tandem nursing, how it can help the older child accept the younger one with less animosity/sibling rivalry, as well as how nursing toddlers is beneficial, etc. AND I sent her the WHO guidelines as well as AAPs to share with her doctor. So annoying that a doctor would do something like that. Arg!
TTC/PG Blog | Mommy Blog
Interesting - I've never called our doctor either! It always surprised me on the 0-3 board how many people would comment that they called their pedi about some minor parenting issue or another...I guess to me, that call is reserved for medical issues (other than very minor things), and I was starting to wonder if there was something lax about my parenting because I didn't consult them all the time lol! Good to know I'm not alone!
oh phew! I didn't want to offend anyone - because like I said it's not right or wrong (especially if someone over at the peds office is answering every question that comes in...)
It was a group of moms that I'm not that close with (DH plays softball with one woman's husband and she is active in a moms (daytime) play group or something and I think these women were from that connection). Anyways... I mentioned that we were going camping (didn't end up happening since DH went out of town) and one of them said she really wanted to go but had not had a chance to ask her doctor about it
. So then I thought maybe her baby (4mo older than Jack) had health concerns or something - but I didn't get that feeling and she asked what our ped had said about it. I was like, uhhhh I didn't think I needed to ask about that (don't plan to) and the convo got rolling from there.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
about 8.5 months old
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
she's now mastered sitting from the standing position so she likes to do it all the time now. she'll just be in the crib and stand up...sit down...stand up...sit down...over and over and over again LOL
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
in a few weeks for her 9 month checkup
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
sleep! we are having HUGE issues with naps right now. i plan to write a separate post about it b/c i need help!!
(5) If you (plan to) CD, how did you choose which CD's to use/try? Tips for being successful with CD? Any ?getting started? tips?
i got a little bit of everything to try (except pockets b/c i knew i didn't like those). i was hoping i'd like PFs the best (cheapest) but still got some of everything else just to see if i liked something else more.
there is good "cloth 101" info at abbyslane.com
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you?
nothing specific...just the general birth plan of having a vaginal birth if possible, definitely an epi, and trying to keep an open mind in case we needed to do a c/s
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)?
i usually nurse her between 7-8am when she wakes up (leave the house around 8:20-8:30). i then pump at work around 10-11am, 1-2pm, and 4-5pm. i usually get home between 6:30-7pm and i'll nurse her as soon as i get home, we do solids, then our bedtime routine and i nurse her again before around 8pm...try to get her down around 8:30pm (slowly working to move it up to 7:30-8pm).
when i am not working i almost never pump (bad, i know! but pumping is such a huge pain, i get lazy - big props to EPers and those that pump more often) occasionally i will pump about an hour or so after nursing her in the morning. i still have a decent freezer stash (approx. 120oz??) b/c she doesn't take as much milk while i am at work compared to what i pump.
at work i simply pump directly into 2 large (8oz) Dr. Brown's bottles that fit into my PISA perfectly. i store those in the fridge at work and when i get home i transfer the milk into lansinoh storage bags and put them in the freezer. i also store the flanges in a large gallon size ziploc bag in between pumping sessions so i don't have to wash them until i get home at night.

(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 8.5 months!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? got his 6th tooth this past week, loves avocado apparently!
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? 9 month checkup
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? he's been so clingy
(6) What are your thoughts on birth plans? Will/Did you have one? If so, what are some of the points/requests that are/were most important to you? we had some ideas of what we wanted to do, but ultimately we agreed to just do what was necessary for baby's safety - flexibility was key.
(7) Mamas: If you work outside the house, what is your pumping schedule and how do you store your pumped milk (freshly pumped as well as the milk you have at home)? we use formula, so I'm not going to be much help with this one!
Advice for the pedi's office - just tell them you'd like to space out the shots - most people are against paying copays for just shot visits, but I had no problem with that as long as he wasn't getting all those shots at once!
Also, I think we're going to have to do some serious sleep training this week after he settles back into his routine (we were OOT for the weekend). I really love the cuddling, but I can't get up without him waking up and he has to be touching me all the time.
my office doesn't charge for "shots only" visits - probably as long as you are coming in at regular well baby visits. Not sure if it's because it's pretty normal around here or what - I think our state requires insurance co.'s not to charge for immunizations so that might have something to do with it too. Doesn't hurt to ask!
