Very stupid question.... (cloth diapers)

im not sure how cloth diapers work, i mean, obviously, they're cloth. but other than that, what, if anything, is there to stop peepee/poop from leaking through to LO's clothes? and how many did you buy at first, and also from where ?

Re: Very stupid question.... (cloth diapers)

  • There are a wide variety of covers (think modern, better version of plastic pants). Everyone has their favorites, depending on their baby and their budget. There are also diapers with the cloth and cover together.

I don't have the links, but there are a couple websites and blogs that are super helpful to get an overview. Then this board is great for questions/clarifications. Look for other "new to cloth" posts for the links, or hopefully someone who has them will hop on here.

Also, this board has a lot more activity during the week, so if you don't get the info you need, you could try again Monday. Good luck, we love our cloth! Let me know if you have any specific questions!

  • Some people use wool covers, others use PUL covers (a plastic laminate) others use diapers with the "cover" built in.  I like these...

My total stash includes 3 snappis, 24 newborn prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers (GMDs), 6 NB covers, a few kissaluvs fitteds (size 0), 24 infant/small prefolds from GMDs, 3 small covers, 3 size duo wraps (a multi-size cover), 12 medium prefolds from GMD, 3 medium covers, a few one-size fitteds and 9 bumgenius pockets.  I should be around if you have any more questions.  When I'm done with dinner, I can go get the link the other poster was talking about...

  • There's a lot to read about and learn as there are many choices.  They all have some sort of waterproof cover on them (some people use wool as it can be waterproof and breathable but I think the majority use the regular covers).  Here's one of the links that's passed out often https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm then let us know if you have more questions!

You will need enough diapers to get you through 2-3 days depending on how often you want to do laundry.  Newborns need 12-16 diaper changes per day for the first few weeks...after that it lessens so you'll need to decide if you want to cd from the beginning or wait a few weeks.

  • In addition to everything the pps said, I learned a lot from the EFF blog

  • Another breathable cover option is fleece. We just switched to it at night because we had been getting diaper rash, and I was amazed that it really did keep our bed dry. Rash was much, much better too!
