Potty Training

Going back to diapers for nighttime/naps?

Anyone end up doing this after some time of 100% zero diapers? We've been diaper free for 8 days and she has only woken dry for 2 naps and 2 nighttimes.I know lots of kids take a long time to be able to hold it all night so I don't want to endure this level of laundry for years to come but I don't want to regress her either. We've been otherwise accident free since Friday. Thoughts?

  • We're on day 3 of the 3DayPT, but I haven't been doing naps or night time in underwear.  **gasp!**  We've been doing pull-ups and just calling them his naptime undies.  I'm just trying to get him potty trained for awake time and we'll gradually go to naps then night time.

  • DS has been diaper free for 13 days.  He wakes up dry from his nap everyday, but  night time is a different story.  He has only woke up once with a dry diaper and we were in the same bed in a hotel.  I have several ultimate crib sheets that have been a savior.  I get DS up to pee after 2-3 hours of going to bed, but I can't seem to wake him up early enough so he doesn't have an accident in the morning.  This morning I thought he was dry, but he had peed earlier and it had already dried.  Right now he is able to go 3-4 hours dry at a time.  I have even limited liquids and am still at a loss.  I am not planning on putting him in diapers/pull ups though.  I figure he will get it sooner or later.  I usually do a load of laundry daily though so I just throw the ultimate crib sheet in with it.

Ya know what, I should go cold turkey for night too. Do you use a waterproof liner?

  • DS has been day and nap potty trained for over a year and he still sleeps in a diaper. He pretty much nap trained the same time as day but night time is a different story. About 2 months after he was potty trained he started being dry every night and he slept in underwear for about 6 months and had no accidents. Then all of a sudden he started waking up wet...after 2 weeks of changing his sheets every morning we went back to diapers at night. I have tried limiting his liquid intake after dinner but nothing seems to work. I went back to diapers at night because waking up wet REALLY upsets him. Being in a diaper at night has not caused any regression or problems during the day and he wants it off as soon as he wakes up in the morning.

  • Thank you for your input, all :)

I think I'll continue with the undies at night for a little while longer; she woke up dry last night (that makes 3 nights in 1.5wks) so I want to give her more time.

We do use the Ultimate Crib Sheet. We also layer one of those cotton waterproof large "pads" that they use at hospitals over that so I usually only have to wash a pad each day. I like to check on her before I go to bed at night and if she's already wet I just pull that pad out from under her, take her undies off, and replace any wet blankets so she can sleep the rest of the night warm and dry.

I actually use the ultimate crib sheets.  They work wonderful.  I follow the suggestions in the 3 day book.  I take him to the bathroom twice before bed and then again before I go to bed.  I have found he can go 2.5-3 hours after he goes to bed. I try to get to him before he has an accident, but haven't always been successful.  This morning he was DRY!!!!  I was so happy.  I am just going to continue with this and see how it goes.

Not sure how light of a sleeper your DD is, but I usually wake DS up and place him on the potty right before I go to bed.  He usually goes right away and will go back down very easy.  The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.  I was hesitant at first, but it seems to be doing good for him.

  • Sleep dryness depends on physiological readiness, and is unrelated to daytime dryness. It's more normal for a kid to wet at night until age 4 or older than it is for a 2 or 3yo to stay dry all night. DD is in diapers at night, and she'll stay that way until she's consistently dry or she asks to not wear them any more.

I remember being 4 or 5 (not yet in school) and my parents trying everything to keep me dry at night. Bribes, treats, limiting liquids, taking me to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Even the alarms that go off when they get wet so you wake up. Dr's appts, ultrasounds, etc. Bottom line, I had a small bladder and my body just wasn't sending the message to my brain that I needed to get up. At one point, the night wetting suddenly stopped and it was never an issue again. That's how it is for most kids- if they know the drill (which they should if they are day-dry) then it will happennaturally when their body is mature enough. No need to make an issue or stress about it. If your kid still wakes up wet, let them wear a diaper and don't worry about it.
