Success after IF

First pedi appt didn't go so well =(

Jack did not gain any weight. He is actually down an oz from what he was when we left the hospital. I am so upset by this, I feel like I have been starving him. Although you would never know it by him, he never cries, and has been having wet and dirty diapers. I have been feeding on demand which has been every 3hrs the nurse we met with wants him fed every 2hrs, and we have to go back Monday for another weight check. I am just so disappointed. I really hope he can gain a little this weekend so we don't have to supplement.

  • Is there an LC you can see in the meantime? I always found appts with the LC to be so helpful when concerns like this came up. GL!

  • Garrison was slow to gain in the beginning too.  I met with a LC and made a better effort to sleep and eat and things got a lot better.  Hang in there!!

So sorry. I hope he starts gaining soon! I echo others' comments - meet with a LC. Good luck!
  • So sorry.  If you have access to a good LC, I'd recommend that as well.  It would be useful to have them do a weigh-in before and after feeding to see how much he's getting and also to check your latch so that he's getting the most from his efforts.  Hopefully things will improve beautifully from here.

    Ditto this.

I started attending my hospital's LC-led BF support group because E was slow to gain weight. I was able to weigh her, then nurse her, and then weigh again to see how much she was getting. I went 12 weeks in a row and it turned out that E was just a slow gainer. Babies usually gain 4-8 ounces a week and she always gained right around 4.

Please don't feel like you're starving your baby -- you're doing the best you can!  It's such a learning process for both of you in the first few days/weeks!

  • I ended up having to go to formula but I found a LC so helpful.
They really want to help you and they give you so much support.  Meet with one.  They are wonderful people.  I hope he gains some weight.

  • I found the lactation consultants were so helpful, I learned about hindmilk, and a proper latch too, in case he is not latched properly, they can help you with that. Feeding him every 2 hours should help him gain a little bit...good luck, keep us posted.

  • I am right there with you. 1 week past discharge DS only gained 1 oz. Pedi said he should be gaining an ounce a day. I am devastated. I so understand what you are feeling. My pedi suggested that I pump exclusively for 24 hours to see how much I am producing. From what I can tell, I am not producing enough. I go back on Monday morning to discuss my next step. I also have a phone call in to a LC. Please let me know how it goes with your little one. I am glad to know I am not the only person going through this!

  • THat's not a significan't weight loss. My pedi said until they loose 10% they would recommend supplementing. My LO lost 14% so we had to supplement. hopefully your LO will pick back up soon!
