HSG Question

Hi Ladies,

I have a question for anyone who has done an HSG test. Can I go by myself? Is there any recovery time that I need to know about? I am wondering if I will be fine to drive home from the hospital myself or if I need to get someone to go with me. I don't see why it would be a problem, but I would hate to get there and them tell me they can't do it because no one is there to drive me home.

If you have done the test, how did it go? I've been reading as much as I can and have found such a range of reports - from never felt a thing to hurt like hell and passed out. Not really helpful.

Any real world experiences to share?

Thanks!

Re: HSG Question

  • Hi there.  I actually had an HSG last month.  I was prepared for allot of pain, based on what women said online, but was pleasantly surprised to find that I barely felt a thing.  It was over in 5 minutes too.  Very minor spotting that day.  Completely able to drive.  Good luck.  :)

  • I drove myself to and from my HSG.  For me, it wasn't bad at all.  I took 4 advil an hour before the HSG and I didn't have any cramping afterwards.

It hurt, but only for a minute or two during the procedure.  I was fine otherwise.  Definitely bring a pad with you, the one they gave me was enormous.

I didn't think it was bad at all.

    Good luck!!!

  • It was a piece of cake for me too.  Drove myself home.  Good luck!

  • I also drove myself...there really wasn't a need for anyone else to be there.  I thought it hurt like hell, and I did take some Advil before the appt as others suggested.  It was pretty quick though, so just as I was about to kick the doctor in the face for killing me, it was over!  Stick out tongue

  • Thanks so much!

Sorry for the TMI, but...about the pad thing... I assume that in the theory of "what goes up must come down", I will need some sort of pad, right? Exactly how much are we talking about here?

I have these images of blue dye trickling out me for the rest of the day. That kind of cracks me up.

  • I may be in the minority here...but, my HSG hurt like nothing else!  It was mostly due to my partially removed tube and the dr. was attempting to push dye thru it (3 times!) to see if it was closed off or not...and she's lucky I didn't mule kick her for the pain she put me thru!   I had tears streaking down my face and was essentially yelling at her to hurry up.

Oh, and totally bring your own pad....the ones they provided were HUGE!  Not sure where they got those things....LOL!   I had some cramping afterwards, and some leakage...but it wasn't blue dye -- LOL!!

    Good Luck!

Its actually not alot of dye so its not like it comes whooshing back out.  My dr said to use a pad mainly b/c they swab your cervix with betadine and that will stain.  I also drove myself there and straight back to work - though oddly I just didn't feel great the rest of the day, not terrible and not sure if it was related.

  • I had some mild discomfort, but nothing I would classify as "pain".  The discomfort was probably due to some polyps they found and were trying to get a better image/angle, so some of the lady bits were pushed around too much, and they had me move a few times to get a better view.  I could've driven home, but DH had come with me anyway.  Good luck......you should be fine driving.
  • Hi Melle,

For me the HSG was easy. I was expecting pain and everything else bad but was pleasantly surprised.

I was able to drive even though my sister was with me. I don't recall any leakage or having to use a pad.

    Mind over matter.

I had one last week.  It hurt.  The good thing is it lasted 5 minutes tops.

My mom took me, but I could have totally driven myself.

  • I did it - it was fine. Not nearly as bad as I expected it to be and over so quick. I didn't feel a thing until they inflated the balloon. It was just a little mild pressure. The dye took me a little by surprise and it did hurt, but just like bad period cramps. I think what made it bad was not being abe to move or soothe the pain by rubbing the hurting area. But that pain lasted less than 60 seconds. As soon as he delfated the balloon it was all gone. No soreness or anything. I was a tiny bit lightheaded, but I think that was more nerves.

No bleeding afterwards or anything. Didn't even need the pad.

He said my right tube was clear and my left tube had a small blockage, but the test cleared it all out. They should be nice, clean and all lubed up to slide a fertilized egg right on through. LOL!
