IUI vs IVF - WWYD??

Hi ladies,

I've been pretty quiet on doing posts, because I haven't had much to say. We are on another break cycle, because we decided to go on vacation this coming week. So next month we would do IUI #5.

I'm conflicted. I really don't think IUI's are going to work for us. However, this will only be our second IUI with our current RE, (and I really think my first RE was a total bonehead) so she definitely thinks we need to do another IUI before moving forward with IVF. I think I've put enough time, money, and energy into IUI, but how aggressive should I be with my RE with my thoughts about being anti-IUI?

Has anyone's RE wanted them to do one thing, and you were adament on doing something else? I know she is the expert, but it's my money I'm throwing away on IUI's - shouldn't I have a big say in it too? I'm not a passive person, but I feel like I'm being somewhat passive in this situation.

Any advise would be great. Thanks ladies!

  • IF you are very sure that is what you want to do, then I would just tell the RE that. I don't know your history, but I'd say it also depends on your situation.

  • I can definitely appreciate your want to get things moving and stop feeling like you are throwing good money after bad. But perhaps one more IUI isn't that bad of an idea. They don't cost much comparatively, are much easier on your body, and perhaps you will get lucky and avoid having to go down the IVF path. Good luck in your decision!

I would probably go for another IUI if I were you. It is also good to see how your body responds to the meds, and you are with a new RE so that will be good for him to see. GL!

  • That's a toughie. I can tell you that you that my RE would have ha us doing another IUI this cycle had I not insisted on moving to IVF. I  think that if you feel IVF is the way to go, then you should trust your gut. I hope that whatever you choose, you get a BFP!

  • If you're ready to move ahead with an IVF I think you should do so.

My RE pretty much gives us the options that he thinks are appropriate, discusses the pros and cons of each, basically how aggressive one is over another, and lets us decide.

  • I can totally relate.  We've only done 3 IUI's, but my latest RE "didn't think we needed IVF" Confused and was in no hurry, but we are clearly not getting pg w/IUIs.  It depends on what you are ready for and if want to keep going or kick it up a notch.  I'm so past ready for some better stats that we've switched REs (again) are finally going for IVF ASAP.

    Good luck making your decision.

  • If your'e OOP... I think that if you've already done four IUIs, and you and your dh feel like IVF is the next step for you then I would push for the IVF.

But if you have insurance covering the cycle then I would be more willing to give one more IUI a chance.

In the end you and your dh have to do what's right for you. It's definitely worth sitting down with your RE about it.

  • My RE told me that he'd move to IVF after 3 IUIs. But with my diagnosis, I didn't think there was any point and told him I wanted to move on after 2... and that's what we did. I think it's your body and your life and you shouldn't feel bad about pushing for what you really want.

With that said..... if you think your previous RE was a quack, perhaps you shouldn't even count those IUIs into the equation? And if it's true that your best chances with IUI are with the first three, maybe you should give your current RE one more shot...

Best of luck with whatever decision you make!!
