Baby's Gender Cake (Edited)

I am so excited for this. My Fiance's family live in MA(we live in TX) and with them being so far away they miss out on fun Baby News(my family lives 3 mi from us so we tell them all  the news in person). We've always told them via text message or phone, which isn't much fun. Well, I wanted them to have something special for the Baby's gender reveal. I arranged for a cake to be made with blue inside and they are having a dinner tonight, with Baby's Gender Cake for dessert. We are going to Skype, so we can see everyone's reactions. With all the drama regarding LO possibly having Trisomy 18, this is something fun to look forward too. I just hope my future MIL and SIL aren't too disappointed. They DESPERATELY wanted a little girl. They have been dying to go shopping for LO. Hopefully they have just as much fun shopping for our Baby Boy.

Any fun stories from your Baby's gender reveal y'all want to share?

Edited Note: In my original post I used the term Baby's  Sex Cake instead of Baby's Gender Cake, not realizing how DIRTY the term "sex cake" sounded. I am claiming PG brain!

Re: Baby's Gender Cake (Edited)

  • I wonder if people intentionally use the word "gender" incorrectly to avoid terms like "Sex Cake." Just a thought.

Seriously, though, I think that your reveal will be fun, and I am sure that you MIL and SIL will be thrilled with a boy!

  • Its hard though, because technically we ARE talking about the baby's sex, not necessarily their gender. Gender is an identity, sex is what's between your legs.

That being said, I do agree that a sex cake just sounds dirty. Hehe

  • Aww, good luck with your reveal!

We got a small cake for our reveal to my ILs. Coincidentally, MH & I were wearing blue, and all 4 of his other family members were wearing blue when we got to the house!

My mom was working, so we went & surprised her at her store & asked her to ring up these items, which were 2 baby boy outfits. She was like, "Who's that for? The baby? It's a baby boy?!!" & she started crying & shouting to her co-workers, it was the best!!

  • Super cute idea! Our families live in NY and we are in HI, so I may "borrow" that idea :)  Did you order it from a bakery?

I find the gender/sex pet peeve that's common on these boards to be really amusing. Of all the grammer offenses that I see on these boards and hear in real life everyday, the gender/sex one offends me the least. In fact, I have no idea why people even correct it. I've seen people write "who's finding out they're babies gender?" And the thing that people pick on is the fact that they used gender instead of sex. WTF? There are so many other things wrong with that sentence, and that's what you focus on?

Personally, I feel it is perfectly acceptable (albeit not technically correct) to use the terms interchangably, and in cases like this, a "gender" party is definitely more appropriate than a "sex" party!

I try to use the terms correctly, but I don't think that gender is wrong, either, for many women. Here's why: if you're going to buy things for the baby based on the sex, then you are assigning a gender role to your LO. Now, behaviors, etc. may change when the child gets older and can make his/her own decisions, but, for now, if you are finding out the sex, and making decisions based on that information, than you are also finding out the gender.
