I was at BRU about a week ago and they had like a little wheel to spin to win prizes from their Kiddie Kandids photography, or whatever its called...I won a free 8 x 10 portrait collage but, while we were there for the shoot, it seemed like they had a lot of deals (20-40% off)....
But, I realized that it seems like their studio props would be easy to recreate at home....They had a soft blue blanket as a backdrop set up on a stiff backboard (you could use the front of your couch as the backboard) and underneath the blue blanket they had a stack of phone books with soft padding wrapped around them, this was used to prop DS up on his side....
You could always find a pretty park to take pictures at too! Just some DIY ideas
I didn't DIY mine, but Burke wore the shirt he has on in my siggy picture...it's looks like a little baseball jersey. My photograhper sat him on a couch propped in the corner with a baseball glove and a little baseball cap in his lap/hands. We also had him propped up on the side of the couch over the arm. Also just sitting on a white sheet with generic sitting poses, we also gave him a baseball to play with in some of them.
I took her outside and sat her on a blanket near the lillies in my garden in a cute dress and headband. My original pics weren't great, so I played around with them a bit in Lightroom (made by Adobe) to brighten them up a bit. I think they turned out rather cute:
It was still raining here in June so I did some indoor ones. I want to still go out and take some outdoor ones. He really wasn't too into it. But here are some that I got. Just make sure to get down on their level and pay attention to whats in the background.
Re: If you did DIY 6 month (ish) pictures...

mine were simple. I took her out front & put a blanket down & snapped some pics. She was sitting up & that's it!
I wish I would have faced her the other way so the cars wouldn't be in the background, but I guess thats why I'm not a photographer! LOL!
I got a "1/2" onsie, made a tutu, threw down a solid background, and took some pics. You can see some here: https://finallymom.blogspot.com/2010/06/i-really-like-your-baby.html

We took her to a park and laid her on a blanket.
Just make sure to stay at their eye level, try to avoid high angle shots.
We were in the middle of moving at 6 months, so I did a quick shoot of something like this:
By 8 months, we were in the new house. These might give you more ideas:
For these, you just need someone to hold baby from behind:
And some inside shots:
Have fun with it!

We got ours done on the cheap at Penneys. I was happy with them overall.
