Critique our boy name

Linus

This is our top cotender right now if we have a boy. I love it but worry he would be teased. What do you think of it? Obviously it reminds people of the Peanut's character, but even with that association, does that make it bad?

We're not telling anyone IRL any names we're considering, so just want to see what strangers think. Why do you like it, or why not? Lay it on me. I can take it. Geeked

  • Its not my style but with that being said I have heard much worse names and I think it could potentially grow on me. I don't have any negative feelings about it.

  • I personally hate Peanuts, so I wouldn't want that association, but I think the name is pretty nice and I don't think there's really any reason you shouldn't use it. I doubt that he would be teased for it.
  • I wouldn't use it, but wouldn't judge you for using it

  • I actually really like it! It's very vintage chic:) I don't think the Peanuts association makes it bad- it hasn't for other Peanuts names like Charlie and Lucy.

  •  I am a big LOST fan, so I think of the character Ben Linus from that show. He seems evil, then tragic, and then eventually gets redeemed. That Linus and the Charlie Brown Linus both remind me of a weak kind of fellow. So my vote is no, but that's why there are so many names! Different ones for different preferences! Smile

  • i like it. it's in that family of miles, elliot, leo, etc.... i really love that style.

  • I agree with the "vintage" label of the name, and I like similar names like Elliot and such, so I think it could work. I wouldn't personally use it, but you should if you like it!

  • I like it - it's one of my guilty pleasure names. It's easy to say, easy to spell, has no crazy variations, and isn't even in the top 1000; no easy feat. I think it's going to get a little more play because of the LOST character, Ben Linus (surname in this instance), but yeah - I like it.

  • I like it. It's a family name for DH, so it's in the running for us if we ever have a boy.

It definitely feels like an antique, but I like that. People will probably make the Peanuts association, but it's not really a bad one.

  • I thought of the show Lost and then Peanuts. It isn't a bad name but it is nms.
  • I like it, but I immediately associate it with the cartoon character (and to a lesser extent, the saint).

    This for me too!

  • I do think of Peanuts, but thats not a bad association. I don't really like the name, but it could grow on me...
  • I think it is pretty bad.
  • I like it, but I have to say that kids may make fun of it. My dad and brother share a name of a sesame street character and my brother was mocked mercilessly through high school because of it.

  • I love it. It's one of our three boy names should we have one one day.

Well, what else would you do with the name Snuffaluffagus?

All kidding aside, I kinda like Linus.  I also like Peanuts, so there is a positive association there.  But it's a nice name, too.

    Me too.

I just think of Charlie Brown's best friend carrying around his blanket. Even trying to put that association aside, I just really don't like the name.

That would have been awesome if my brothers name was Snuffaluffagus :)

  • I tend not to ever "hate" a name. Linus isn't something I would choose, but I can totally picture knowing a little Linus (or an adult Linus) and totally thinking it's the perfect name for him. Even if people initially think of Peanuts, I think it wouldn't be long before people just think of your son!

For example, I know a Felix. At first, I did think of Felix the cat, but eventually that impression was completely gone. Now if someone asks me what I think of Felix, I only think of the guy I know.

  • I really like the name. Sure there are those that are going to think Peanuts. It is one of those classic names that grows with the LO.

  • You asked for teasing, but the only things I can come up with refer to Peanuts, which you said doesn't bother you.

    "Hey Linus, where's your BLANKY?"

So I think you're good. Go for it!

  • I actually like the name.

There was a character on Lost whose name was Ben Linus and he wasn't the greatest person in the world (a major weasel, but in the end he became a better person). However, this wouldn't stop me from using it, but you should be aware of this association too.

  • I like it!

  • I have a friend with a son named Linus.  I think it is cute.  For them, it is a cultural thing - they are German.
