Baby might be breech

I had an OB appt. yesterday and my doc highly suspects the LO is breech.  BOOO!!!  She will confirm via a cervix check at my next appt. in 2 weeks.  I'm trying not to get too worked up about this since there isn't anything I can do and it's not confirmed yet.  But she did discussion external version at 37 weeks and it that doesn't work, scheduling a c-section.

I absolutely do not want a c-section!!  I will have a newborn and 1 year old and I would rather not deal with that healing time.

What is the latest your baby turned by itself into the correct position? My LO is still really active so I'm hopeful she flips on her own (if she is in fact breech)!

Re: Baby might be breech

  • DS was breech and we did the external version. If you want to read about mine or talk to me about it I would be happy to. I know some people find it scary but I really felt like it was the right choice for us and that I was in great hands the whole time. I sadly did fall into the 1% of people who have complications, and my water broke 17 hours after the procedure. And while it all lead to me having a c-section I know the Drs did a great job taking care of me and my DS.

  • I saw that on FB.  sorry you are going through that.  I hope she turns soon.

My obgyn freaked me out yesterday - he said 'baby feels breach'...which I know she is not but she was in a weird position yesterday.  Then he felt more and said - 'no she is head down'.  I had an u/s last week, so I knew he was wrong.

I hope you get another vaginal birth.

  • I'd love to read about your experience.  I've never paid attention to the whole concept before.  TIA!

  • In addition to the external version, you could consider seeing a chiropractor. They might be able to help adjust you so that your baby has a bit more room to turn around.

    Good luck!

  • with this pregnancy the baby was transverse until about 33 weeks and then turned head down.  ask your OB about doing inversions exercises on your own and if they feel it is safe for your particular pregnancy.  my OB said it was fine for me to do and we did it about 2 or 3 times only.  i don't know if that is what did it or not.  it sounds funny when you read about it or see one done, but you can google it to find out more.  but again, don't do unless your OB says it is ok.  good luck.
  • I have no idea how to turn a breach baby around but at my 35 wk apt on Tuesday my LO was also breach. My OB wasn't too concerned saying that there was still a lot of time for him to turn around and we didn't even talk about a C-section yet but I also don't have a toddler. My OB said not to worry yet and we will talk more at my 37 wk apt.

Hopefully she will just turn herself around!! I can't believe how close you are soo exciting...

  • My LO did not turn.  Sorry.

We did discuss an external version and ruled it out, mostly because she's been breech the entire pregnancy, and it turns out, that was a good thing as her cord was part of the issue.

  • I think James was still breech at 31 weeks and he turned in time. At 37 weeks the OB wasn't sure if he was breech or not and I had an ultrasound to confirm he was head-down.

This pregnancy, at my 36 week appt, my OB thought the baby was breech but did an ultrasound and he was head down.

Bottom line: they can't always tell by feeling. And, there's still a good amount of time for her to turn around, and I hope she does for you!

  • I remember having this issue with Audrey. She was breech the whole time (little stinker). I did EVERYTHING - chiropractor, exercises, etc. to no avail. We scheduled an inversion at 38.5 weeks. That is late for an external version but my OB didn't want to do the procedure until she could be safely delivered if something went wrong. He wouldn't try it sooner and then just send me home. He would only agree to the version if it was version + induction so we went in that day knowing that, somehow, she was coming out.

I ended up with a section, she got into severe heart rate distress. But if I had it to do again, I'd do the same thing. Trying the version was the only chance I had of possibly avoiding a section because they would have sectioned me at 39 weeks and I highly doubt she would have turned by then.

FYI my sister had a version with her third at 36 weeks. Her OB did the procedure, she rested in the hospital for an hour and then went home. She delivered vaginally at 39 weeks. So it does work sometimes.

  • My baby was breech but we didn't realize it until I was at 10 cm.  Long story but she was born at 37 weeks and I had only had one internal... and they were swamped the night she was born.   I made it to a 10 and pushed for quite a while without drugs before we realized she was breech so the c-section was a huge bummer.   That being said the whole c-section experience and recovery was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.   I was out shopping within 3 days of the c-section.  Good luck... I hope she flips for you!
