Come in if you have a forceful letdown...

If you have a forceful letdown and your DC chokes or gags alot when eating does your DC also have tummy or gas problems?  Im determined to figure out why my DS is so fussy.  Its weird he is either an angel or the complete opposite.  He will be very calm, happy, sleep well for like 10 days, then almost within a few hours he starts getting irritable and what i would consider gassy.  Sometimes the irritability phase can last over a week and then he is better and happy again.  When its good its great, but when it is bad its ugly!  We try the gas drops and have seen the doc, but he is 10 weeks now and im wondering if my foreceful letdown is the root of the problem....its so hard t see my son go from being so content, sleeping in 6 hour intervals at night and making so much progress just to revert back to being so irritable like all day long and barely sleeping.

Re: Come in if you have a forceful letdown...

  • I have a forceful letdown and DS chokes almost every time.  When he unlatches b/c he's coughing, I place a burp cloth to catch the rest of the letdown.  It seems to have helped some! I also try leaning back as much as possible so that it's not pouring into his mouth.  I found this on kellymom and it had a lot of great ideas:

  • I have forceful letdown. Around 3 weeks I noticed that DS was uncomfortable during nursings and afterwards. He would pull back, but want to keep nursing. The LC told me he might have air trapped in his tummy and he was trying to make more room for it by arching his back, but then wanting to keep nursing because that usually makes things feel better. I think he was getting a lot of air down as he was gulping quickly to keep up. What I do differently is burp him throughout the nursing and I only nurse on one side per feeding. It took a little while for my breasts to get used to this, but it has really made a difference. Since it is happening infrequently, do you think it might relate to something you ate? GL!

  • Oh yeah--I also hand expressed some of the thin foremilk at the beginning (just took him off the breast and expressed into a burp cloth), and sometimes pumped an oz before nursing. Eventually I didn't have to do that anymore. GL!

  • My DS has gotten used to the letdown and can keep up with it. He used to gag and pull of the breast screaming and he had some really fussy periods. Check out this webpage for some tips I've done most of them and it really seemed to work.
