I had my 20 week u/s today. First let me start by saying I am team blue...it's a boy. They found a coracoid plexus cyst on the babies brain. Alone, it doesn't cause any type of retardation or deformities. But, this cyst is associated with Trisomy 18. Which if the baby has this, there will be no quality of life for the baby after birth. I had an amnio done today at my appt and will have the results monday. So by monday I will know if the baby has this or not. If he does, I will have to terminate the pregnancy. I am totally freakiing out....had anyone had anything like this and the results have turned out fine??? TIA
Re: Just when I thought things were bad...it only gets worse....T&P's
They found that at my twenty week ultrasound also , i didnt have an amnio because I had no other markers .Fortunatly when I went for my level 2 ultra sound and then my 3d ultra sound everything looked great and the cysts were gone .Are you high risk because of age or anything ??
my thoughts and prayers are with you!
i hope all turns out well.
I had this happen in a previous pregnancy. The baby had Tri 18, but she had lots and lots of other markers besides the cysts. As a matter of fact, they downplayed the cysts. I chose to terminate at that time (I was much further along, thanks to delayed amnio results). I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
On a positive note, I was told that the Chorid Plexus cysts alone doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. At the time I heard they are common in healthy babies they and go away in healthy babies in the 3rd trimester. So stay positive and don't freak out too much because it could all be OK. Lots of T & P's are heading your way.
Congratulations on finding out that LO is a boy. I hope that you get some positive news and that your little guy grows strong and healthy. I wish peace and wisdom for you and am so sorry that you are going through this.
I will be praying for you and your little man.

Due to the fact that I already am a high risk pregnancy, and the chance of miscarriage from an amnio, I am on strict bed rest for the next few days...My appt is Tuesday.
Is there anyway he can come to your house?
So we're going through this right now also, so I understand your worry. The cyst on our baby girl's brain was identified at 19 weeks. We had another scan today (25 weeks), although we don't have the results, I think the cyst is still there. The integrated prenatal screening (blood work and ultrasound) done earlier did not show an increased risk for trisomy-18.
I have done a bit of research on this and I can share what I've found. It has reassured me somewhat. Choroid plexus cysts are found in 1% of 20-wk ultrasounds, so 1 out of every 100, the majority of which are found in normal babies. They were first reported in the mid-80s, when ultrasounds became routine but there is still controversy about how to deal with them when they are found because it can cause undue worry, since so many of these cases result in normal babies.
As you said, CPCs themselves do not carry any particular risk. Trisomy 18 is usually associated with other anatomical abnormalities found in the anatomical scan (heart, kidney and hand abnormalities). According to one study which compiled 17 previous studies, when CPCs are found alone (isolated CPC), without other anatomical abnormalities, the risk for trisomy 18 was 1 in 150, so less than 1% resulted in trisomy 18. The size of the CPCs and whether they go away or not as pregnancy progressed did not appear to affect the risk of trisomy 18. (The Lancet, vol. 346, pg. 724, 1995)
According to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada guidelines (https://www.sogc.org/guidelines/public/162E-CPG-June2005.pdf), trisomy 18 with CPCs as the only ultrasound marker is only found in 10% of cases. So other abnormalities are usually found.
I hope that your amnio results turn out ok and that you don't worry too much over the weekend. Take care.

Yeah..That ^ (what amullen13 said) for some reason I'm unable to quote..Sorry Im new.
I actually read the same thing when in my last pregnancy I had to terminate after my 20 week u/s. However my l/o had an encephlocele & hydrocephalus..Wouldn't wish that on ANYONE it was absolutely awful.
Im sorry for your bad news, but all hope is not lost yet.. It is my understanding that these cysts are pretty common.
Hello! I'm sorry you are going through this. My baby had a choriod plexus cyst as well at the 20 week anatomy scan. This week, I had a high-level ultraound completed to look for other markers. He had none and the cyst was gone, so the doctors are not that concerned.
To be honest, choroid plexus cysts are very common. My friend who is studying to be an OB/GYN said that ultrasound techs will probably not even check for them anymore because they often mean nothing and are considered a normal part of the baby's brain growth.
I'm surprised they completed an amnio for you because of one cyst, but then I don't know your history.
I am thinking of you and your LO!
The two men in my life. Oh, and I have a husband too...
Now that I am feeling a little calmer today, I had planned on doing research. Thank you for all that info. It is just so scary. I am terrified. After 12 years of failed pg after another. And finally making it this far....I am terrified that something is going to go wrong. Thank you everyone for your prayers and support....I need it now more then ever. Monday can not come soon enough for me...this is going to be the longest weekend of my life.
