Natural Birth

XP: would you try castor oil,

If you were going to be induced? I might need to get induced and I don't want to. I think I might want to try anything and everything to prevent pitocin. Wwyd?

Re: XP: would you try castor oil,

  • I would definitely try "natural" ways of induction before I said yes to pitocin... but it really boils down to you and whatever you think would work best and be more beneficial for you and your baby.

I am not knowledgeable enough but I would recommend you read into aromatherapy and tinctures. I have heard of people using blue or black cohosh to try and induce labor.

Maybe contact an expert aromatherapist in your area.

  • I, personally, would try castor oil, if it was between that and a medical induction.  Of course, I would try nipple stim, spicy food, primrose oil, sex, etc, before getting to the castor oil, but I would try it.

I posted information from a midwife about the use of castor oil yesterday - FYI re: Castor Oil Induction.

Basically, it seems that you need a pretty effaced cervix (at least 40% or more) and the castor oil must be put in protein.  That seems to be the trick, at least in her experience.

My mom used castor oil for three of her four kids and went on to have great, natural labors.  She swears by the stuff.

  • I bought it for my pregnancy with DD but just never did it. I couldn't decide. A friend of mine used it & said it worked for her. She mixed it with orange juice.

Like PP said, try everything else first.

If I had tried absolutely everything else first (like walking, sex, spicy foods, etc) and was facing induction, I would.
  • I did and I had a great result. I mixed 2oz with vanilla ice cream and orange juice. I had a baby in my arms 11 hours later: was in active labor for 7 hours and pushed for 15 min.

ETA: I was 70% effaced and 2cm dilated that day. YMMV.

  • It worked for me!  But I must say, I was on the toilet for an hour and a half, and got hemorrhoids.  But better than pitocin I think!
  • My SIL was desperate to get her baby out and took castor oil to get it started. She mixed it with OJ, I think 1/3 castor oil and the rest OJ. That was a starting dose. She did that, pooped a ton, and 3 days later was having irregular contractions but it wasn't labor. She did 1/2 and 1/2, pooped a ton more, and then REALLY went into labor. Her baby was born the next morning! LOL

FYI, she really did try everything else.

Have you tried Eggplant Parmesean? Certain recipes are renowned to send women into labor 12-48 hours after eating.

  • I would try sex (both intercourse and oral, it (oral) is said to help as well), RRL tea, and pretty much anything other than castor oil. I would NEVER try the castor oil.
