For those of you who know how bad luck seemed to follow us during my pregnancy, Jones' birth was the perfect finale for 9 months full of weird, flukey things. (Besides all of the bleeding and PTL scares, I was in TWO car accidents, our garage collapsed, a huge icicle came through the dining room window while I was standing there, DH had a brain tumor scare, to name a few...)
Friday night, I felt like I had been run over by a truck, just so achy. Woke up during the night with contractions a few times, but didn?t bother to time them because I figured I would notice if they were getting close enough to worry. When I woke up in the morning and was definitely having contractions. I let DH sleep in, in the hopes that we were in for a long night, ate some breakfast and vacuumed the first floor hoping that it would help regularize the contractions. Went for a walk with DH when he woke up and that definitely seemed to help. Then we went to lunch and they were about 6-7 minutes apart, but not super horrible yet.
I laid down to rest up and things started picking up. By 4 I was pretty sure it was the real deal. The contractions stayed around 5 and a half minutes apart for a couple of hours, but we weren?t supposed to go in until they were 5 minutes apart and I wasn?t able to walk or talk through them. Around 6 there was a sudden increase in intensity and the spacing jumped to 4.5 minutes and was quickly escalating, so we waited it out a little longer and made all of our calls. Finally I called the doc to warn them we were coming in and we were on our way!
At triage I hadn?t changed much from the last doctors appointment, around 2 cm, but the contractions were showing up as strong and regular, so they decided to admit me. We got to the labor and delivery room and they sent in the anesthesiologist almost right away. After the epidural kicked in, life was suddenly awesome? I wasn?t prepared for the slightly drunk feeling after being suddenly relieved of my back labor! I felt like I?d had a couple of beers, felt really chatty and relaxed! It was heaven! They started the pitocin and by around 11:00 I had progressed to 5 cm. They decided to break my water and jump up the pitocin drip. I definitely started feeling the contractions then, through the epidural, but it wasn?t ?painful?. I had the thought that it was the perfect epidural for pushing.
By the time I was 8 cm (according to one doctor), Jones? heart rate started not dealing with the pitocin?so they ended up turning it back down and I was going to progress the rest of the way on my own. I was checked again when another doctor came on shift and she said that I was really only more of a 6-7 cm. The contractions immediately eased up after the pitocin was turned off, and then his heart rate started getting too high due to me having an infection/fever, so they started me on antibiotics to fight the infection. After my fever came down, they tried turning the pitocin back on and he immediately started having really drastic decelerations, so they turned it back off. He kept having them through contractions even without the pitocin so I they prepped me for a c-section. I got really shakey from the increased meds for the c-section, but the procedure wasn?t too bad. Before we knew it they were holding Jones up over the curtain for us to see really briefly and then we heard a couple of cries. He was healthy and just alert and taking in his world. DH got to hold him and I was able to kiss him a bunch as they started closing me up.
Then we heard them say that one of the needles was shorter than the others and they were concerned that they couldn?t find the broken piece. So they called in the specialists, a portable x-ray machine, and slid some films underneath me. I had to wait on the table for at least half an hour while they did all this, processed the films, and determined that the piece must not have been in me and they closed me up.
I started throwing up shortly after getting back to the labor and delivery room?which was right before we heard sirens outside and cracked a joke about the hospital being on fire?which ended up being right...there was a little fire on the floor we were on! They eventually transport me to the regular room and the dry heaving continues in full force for 10 hours. Several times I had to hurriedly break Jones? latch and pass him off to DH so that I wouldn?t throw up on him. Poor DH, holding Jones with one arm while helping me hold a pillow to my staples so that they wouldn?t pull so much. I was so sleepy that my eyes kept crossing, but every time I closed my eyes I would throw up.
Around 9:00 that night I realized that something was weird with my back. I asked DH to take a look and the epidural port was still in! So they called for anesthesia to remove it, no one knew why it would still be in. Almost immediately after it was removed I started to feel less disoriented and the dry heaving stopped soon afterwards. After that, everything was much better. I was able to eat the next day (after 48 hours) and got some sleep.
We are home now, adjusting to everything, and getting to know each other! Pain level is good and breastfeeding is going well!! And DH has been amazing! He hasn?t really been around babies much before and he really got the trial by fire the first day!
And here are a few more pics of my sweet baby boy...I'm soo in love!!
I adore his expressions when he's awake!
My two favorite boys napping this morning:
ETA: forgot to add that he was 7 lbs 13 oz, 20.5" and was born at 11:20.
Re: Jones' birth story and psip (long)
oh my goodness!!! hon, you just have all the luck.
what an ordeal...
I'm just so glad he's here and everyone is healthy! and he's so darn cute!!!
Because we're fancy like that.
oh, by the way, congrats again, he is adorable. Just like his nursery poster...lots of dark hair.
Wow, what a story! I can't believe they left your epi port in for that long. My c-section was at 3am and after no sleep, I passed out once it was over. By the time I woke up in recovery, my port was out. I am glad you are doing better and Jones is just super cute!!
Crazy chain of events!! I can't believe they left the port in!
Congratulations again - he is beautiful!
What a crazy day with a wonderfully happy ending!
He's gorgeous, Mama! congrats!
Whoa, that's quite the comedy of errors...only, NOT funny at all. Anesthesiologists are paid waaaaay too much to "forget" to take out the port. I'd be pissed. But I'm glad everything seems to be okay at this point.
He's a cutie pie! Congrats again, Mommy.
He is CUTE!!!!!
But .. LEAVING the epi port in? That's prob why you were barfing - that's ridiculous. Ugh!!
Oh well. All's well that ends well - and he is a BEAUTIFUL baby!!!!

Congratulations!! He is beautiful.
WOW! Sorry it was rough! That doesn't sound like much fun. But, at least you got your happy ending with Jones! Glad you two are doing well!

OMG, that is one of the most crazy birth stories and pre birth stories (I didn't know about all the things that happed to you before hand either) that I have ever heard. I am soo glad that you, your DH and sweet baby Jones are doing well and you all seem to have recovered beautifully.
I wish you all the happiness in the world. XOXOXO
Wow! What a story!
I am so glad that Jones and his mom are doing well. He is so adorable! I love the first picture.

After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!
Wow, that's a lot of crazy stuff happening all at once! I read your post to my DH and he said, "What?! How does all that happen to one person? It's like she's making it up!" I know you're not making it up; I think he means truth is stranger than fiction. LOL
And after all that craziness, you have such a beautiful baby boy. I'm so happy to hear that everything turned out all right.
Congratulations, Mama!
