I'm just wondering if this is one of the items I "need" for baby #3.
And while we're discussing teething, did many of you use Amber necklaces on your boys? My oldest son likes "jewlery" I'm not against them wearing a necklace, but, keep thinking about my mom's reaction to buying my infant son a necklace...
Re: What's so great about Sophie the giraffe? And amber...
I didn't have Sophie for Noel and we did just fine so no, I don't think it's a must have item. However, my mother was looking for something in that price range to get for Ariel as a gift and I told her about Sophie and she got it. Ariel loves it. So if you're looking for a good entertaining teether, it's definitely a crowd pleaser.
As for amber - it's been a lifesaver around here. Noel wore one forever and ever and no one ever commented about it being girly. We got one that was lighter beads mixed with a few darker ones so it looked a bit more boyish. Honestly, they look like surfer necklaces to me so it never seemed like girly jewelry.
We have a sophie. Our dd loved it for 2.5 seconds. But if you're into buying $20 teethers then I would recommend it.
And you could always buy a teething necklace that you wear, I have one of those and DD still noms on it. However, I am not sure what all of this is teaching my child about the purpose jewelery (will she forever be the child who chews on her sleeves or chews on her rings?). Jury is still out on that one.

My 4 yo chewed on necklaces for a long time. Even broke a couple. I finally wore a designated necklace 24/7 so he could only ruin one. Probably didn't totally give up chewing on mine until 2.5-3 yo.
Sam wears a necklace and I'll admit that if he's wearing a neutral color people feel safe assuming he's a girl. But who cares because it helps.
And I felt cuh-razy buying into the hype and getting him a sophie but he loves it!Just in case there is any confusion - Amber teething necklaces ARE NOT for chewing on. The succinct acid in the amber is a natural pain reliever. When the amber warms on the skin it releases oils that are absorbed and causes pain relief much like giving them a dose of tylenol would to relieve teething pain. It's not for actually teething on.
Thanks for clarifying. I had realized this through my early research on them, but that could be confusing.
Max started teething at 3 months and Sophie was the only thing he could grab on to by himself at the time. It's not our favorite, but for an early teether it was priceless.
His amber necklace should be in my mailbox today or tomorrow, and I wish I had ordered it sooner (I waited for a sale).

Whoo Hoo! Just talked to DH about Amber, and I think we will be getting one closer to when the time comes.
As for Sophie, given the mixed reviews (though no bad ones) I think I'll keep it in my arsenal of suggestions for MIL if she asks for gift ideas. She likes ordering online, and LO will only be 3-4 months at Christmas, so that might be the perfect gift for her to give.
