Anyone doing prenatal yoga?

I was wondering if there was a good point along the way to start taking these classes?

  • I keep meaning to go, but I haven't started yet.  Hopefully this Monday I'll attend my first class...  I believe quite a few of the ladies on here are already doing prenatal yoga.

  • I'm starting a 7 week session tonight, actually. I went to a free class at the studio last weekend and there were women due in Jan/Feb, lots of women due in Oct/Nov/Dec, and one due in Aug.

    I don't think there is a bad time to do it since it really just gets your body stretched and centered.

    you can do prenatal yoga throughout your entire pregnancy, you just have to modify it as you get farther along.

    i had been going to a class at our local rec. center, but because there were so many modifications that the instructor had to keep telling me about, he suggested a dvd that has all the variations (3 women all doing the same routine, but at different stages in their pregnancy).

    i've only followed the video a few times, but i love it. i really need to get in the practice of doing it more often.

  • I started last week, at 13 weeks. I'm going once/week right now, but will eventually increase it to twice/week.

  • I looked into several classes, but they were so expensive that I just ordered a video and do it at home. Shiva Rea Prenatal Yoga is really wonderful. I don't think there is a good or bad time to start. Probably the sooner the better kind of thing. It is very gentle yoga; not a lot of strength or balance positions. There is lots of stretching and working on muscles you will need during pregnancy and delivery (like Kegels), and stretching to make you more comfortable during pregnancy. I find it really nice. It's a gentle workout, but also relaxing. Good luck!
  • I started this week. I had been meaning to since the beginning and time just slipped away from me. I am 25w 1d, and I felt it was a great time to start. I can still move and flex, but I am far enough along to feel where I need to focus. I loved it. There were people from 8w to 36w in my class and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
  • I go once a week and started 4 weeks ago.  I will be going until Oct13 (37 weeks).  I also do it at home 2 times a week.  I love it and feel great afterward and sleep so good the night of.

  • I started at around 16 weeks. You can do it any time, but it may feel too easy in the beginning - or too gentle, maybe. Anyway, it's fantastic. Go to a class if you can afford to, because it's a great way to bond with other women. Otherwise, videos are great too - it's all about loosening tight muscles and getting ready for birth.

  • I used to do a lot of fitness classes (step, spinning, pilates) and sort of miss them. Near me, I find it a little pricey for yoga but since I don't spend any time on my Wii Fit anymore I can hardly think I'll force myself to watch a DVD regularly!
  • YES!  I did yoga before I was PG, and it's sooooo good for you!  I have two very good friends who both swore that prenatal yoga made a huge difference in their labor.

    That being said, I went to one prenatal class when I was about 16 or 17 weeks along, and I felt very "young" there, in terms of how far along everyone was.  Most of the participants were already 6 months or farther along.  I didn't feel uncomfortable being there, but the class was definitely geared towards the women who already had large bellies, so it was fairly easy for me and didn't give me much of a workout.  It might be better now that I'm almost 26 weeks, so I'm planning to go back soon.

    In the meantime, I've been doing prenatal and regular yoga DVDs at home.  If you've never done yoga before, you can try Shiva Rea's prenatal yoga DVD (you can order the video and a mat on Amazon.com).  I think it's a good pace for beginners, with easy-to-follow instruction.  If you HAVE done yoga before and are looking for a challenge, Jennifer Wolfe's DVDs are great!  They totally kick my a$$, but in a way that's still safe for baby.

  • I never stopped my regular practice (ok, I did until I was 10 weeks and knew things were going well) and am starting to modify as I get bigger.  There's no bad time to start, just keep in mind your body's new limitations and do what you can, don't push.  It's always a good idea to use to, at any point, to stretch your hips and back... it will help make you more comfortable.

  • I started prenatal yoga in my last pregnancy after I couldn't play tennis anymore so I had some outlet for physical activity (sometime in the 3rd tri).  I had never done yoga before and didn't know how I'd feel about it (I'm usually a run around kind of person).  I  loved it and tried to go at least twice a week.  My water ruptured at 39w6d during a prenatal yoga class :)
