I thought it was a lifesaver...then came the side effects (TMI)

Well...I decided to finally take the plunge and take Zofran yesterday and it helped SO MUCH with my m/s!

However....major constipation has come to accompany it (sorry if TMI).  Now I am trying Colace, Metamucil, and tons of water and nothing :(

If any of you are dealing with this...what are you doing to relieve this pesky side effect?

  • Ask your doc about it but my prenatal has a stool softener in it.  I'm also anemic and they have prescribed me an iron supplement with a stool softener too - iron + pregnancy = cannot go

  • I've had that really fun side effect since starting IVF, so I've been living off metamucil and fiber one bars, lots of water. That's about the best that I've found. Also drinking a little prune juice. It's nasty, but it does the trick.

  • Miralax!! After my D&C I had really bad constipation and actually ended up in the ER because of the pain. One of the things I tried was Miralax, which you can buy over the counter, and I had a BM within a couple days with little to no cramping. Although, you should check with your doctor. I don't know if it's safe during pregnancy.
  • Thanks ladies....I'lll keep trying and go get the prune juice today and check on the miralax.

    Anuja

  • Zofran is SUCH a lifesaver! I was having terrible morning sickness and could barely make it through the day (especially at work), but Zofran changed all that 2 days ago. No constipation yet, although I'd gladly take that over puking. So I know it's slightly off the topic, but does anyone know of reasons not to take Zofran? I'm just not big on taking drugs during pregnancy but I'm certainly able to function more on it. I have to take it every four hours on the dot, otherwise I get back to throwing up almost instantly...the benefits are certainly outweighing the risks right now, but I just want to be reassured that I'm doing the right thing. Any thoughts?

  • I have IBS and the dr. told me I can still take my Miralax daily or as needed.  I also eat Activia yogurt daily and that it my lifesaver!

I have friends that have lived by it and had their babies and all is fine!  I agree...I will take the cosntipation over the m/s...but still not fun when you aleady feel bloated and it has just increased!  Since all of our OBGYN's say it is ok and others have taken it successfully...I have peace of mind that it is fine!

  • I took Zofran with my dd and she just turned 2.  She is a very healthy and active little girl.  My dr just prescribed zofran and I'm hesitant to take it b/c of the constipation problems.  Ugh...talk about being stuck b/w a rock and a hard place.  :)
  • Thank you LovingStepMom!!! This is my first baby and my first doctor appt is tomorrow so I'm going through all kinds of newness here. I appreciate your support :)
