Any tips or tricks for getting the cord to dry up/fall off?

DD#1's cord took about 5 weeks to fall off and DD#2 is almost 2 weeks and it looks like there's no end in sight since her cord is bleeding off and on where it meets her tummy.  We never did anything with A's cord, just let it be and it took forever.  I don't mind it staying on, it's the bleeding part that's problematic.  Not sure if there are any recommended ways to care for it.

Thanks!

  • Our pedi picked off the scabby part at his 2 week appt. It fell off shortly thereafter. She said it was fine to "help" it along. She also said you can't overuse the alcohol, so maybe just do it every changing if you are not already.

  • we used lots of alcohol wipes, every time we changed diapers and then avoided the area when giving them baths.
  • We used alcohol wipes at each diaper change.  Either the Pedi or one of hte hospital nurses told us this would help it along.

We'd squeeze the wipes so the alcohol would drop on the belly button/cord.  It feel off in less than 3 weeks.

  • We used alcohol wipes at every diaper change and would squeeze the wipe and let it really drip in there.  It fell off around 10 days old I think.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

  • we used the wipes too. as most things that happened in those first 3 months, i don't remember when it fell off.

just don't call it the raisen. my sister called it that with my nephew and it fell off and dissapeared. when she turned around her 20 month old daughter had it in her mouth.

  • At our 2 wk appt, it was kind of pulling up - the pedi put that silver stuff on it (silver nitrate?) to dry it out and it fell off within a day.

We're going on Thursday...fingers crossed that he'll do it.

  • We didn't do anything to C's, and it fell off within a week. The midwives told us to avoid alcohol, actually, because it is a preservative, thus causing the cord stump to stick around longer.

  • Our pedi actually told us it was okay to submerge our baby for a bath, because the cord had been in fluid for 40 weeks so what harm would a ten minute bath do.  Then we would take her out, and use an alcohol wipe around the base to dry it up.  I would randomly wipe it off with alcohol with diaper changes and it fell off at 1 week.  No problems!

Our doctor told us the same thing, and it took about 4 weeks to fall off.

Ours is almost ready to fall off and we are two weeks out.  We use the alcohol wipes at each diaper change.  Just wipe around the cord and then squeeze it around the cord.  Dr. said it should fall off this week.  HTH!

We need to do lunch or something when we're both out and about in a few weeks.  I need to meet Mr. K!

  • Ours is still there, but a bit loose. Although I accidentally helped the other day, since I got it caught on my clothes while holding her in just her diaper. Tongue Tied Bad mommy. I've been leaving it alone, by and large.

  • E's was unusually thick according to the docs and nurses, it did hang on way longer than Aidan's did.  Pedi had me using q-tips soaked with alcohol at the base between the cord and his belly button skin to make sure they stayed separated and clean until it fell off.
