Postpartum Depression

Anyone Take Antidepressants During PG?

I have a history of depression and am now 10 wks PG.  I am in a depressive episode and working with my MD.  I think I need to start meds. (I took Lexapro in the past, but don't think it's an option now).

What's your experience? Thanks.

  • I'm taking Zoloft and plan to take it all the way through the pregnancy.

  • I had PPD after DD, and they offered me Zoloft when I went for my first appt. So far I feel okay, but she said if I feel like I need it, it is safe to take while pregnant.  Talk to your doctor.  I sure they will put you on something safe.

  • I took and am continuing to take prozac...Everything was fine and I did really well with it.

  • I took Seroquel and Buispar to help with Bipolar. Both were started in the ttc days and the Buispar I ended up being taken off of in late third tri, the Seroquel I still take.

There are safe meds for treating depression and bipolar, discuss your options with your doctor, it is very important to be upfront and honest about the symptoms you are feeling so that they can find the proper medication or combination of medicine. If symptoms get worse after being on a med do not 'deal' with it, call your doctor back up and tell them you need to be seen immediately. By following the above advice my medical team (talk therepist, psych, and OB) were able to really help me and keep me stable throughout the pregnancy and on.

  • I took prozac and had a healthy pregnancy.
  • I have been on Effexor XR for 8 years...never stopped during either one of my pregnancies, and they are fine.
  • I was on Lexapro when I got pregnant with both of my DS.  My first pregnancy I took it and was weaned off by the 3rd trimester.  For my second pregnancy I was weaned off by the second trimester.  Both of my babies were fine

It is definitely an option! Talk to your OB. I was on Lexapro for 2 years prior to pregnancy and tried to wean off of it while I was TTC so that I wouldn't be taking it while pregnant. Those 3 months were absolutely awful and I developed anxiety on top of the depression that I was already suffering from, so I went back on it about a month before I got PG. My OB said it was fine to continue taking since we determined that being off of it was not good for me and that the benefits of continuing the medication outweighed any risks to the baby. I stayed on my regular 10 mg dosage until I was 34 weeks pregnant, at which time I weaned down to 5 mg a day for 2 weeks until I reached 36 weeks (just to avoid withdrawal symptoms). From 36 weeks until delivery (which was just a couple of days shy of 40 weeks), I was completely off the medication. I started back on it the day after I delivered! The doctor said that the only reason for weaning off in the last month was to reduce the chance of the baby being born with it in his system and having any withdrawal symptoms, which are typically fussiness, restlessness, and a lot of crying. I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy and baby boy! :)

So see what your OB says and if he thinks it's okay for you to stay on! If not, Zoloft is known to be the safest option during pregnancy. HTH!
