car seat technician

My friend has been looking for a place to get her car seat installed by a pro. She checked with the firefighters and they told her they don't do that anymore.  She went to Miami Children's Hospital and they mentioned that they do the inspections every other Wednesday, but the lady with whom she has to make the appointment doesn't return her calls.

Any other ideas?  I'd like to do this myself so I'm very curious to find out where this can be done.

Also, I had read on the Nurseries and Baby Gear Board that you shouldn't install a car seat mat underneath the car seat b/c it's not considered safe and could void the warranty. I passed this information along to her, but wanted to double check with my bumpies, too.

Re: car seat technician

  • When we did our child safety class at Mercy Hospital, it was taught by a lady who runs a store dedicated to child safety. It's located down south on US1, near the Falls I believe. She gave us a coupon for a free car seat check because they are certified to do it at their store. Without that coupon, I believe you have to pay a small fee (not sure how much). It's by appointment because you have to make sure that the person who is certified is working at the time that you want to go by.

Anyway, for the life of me I can't remember the name of the store :( So unhelpful, I know. But maybe you can ask around and someone will know what it's called.

  • Call your hospital. I remember mine South Miami did them, too. I don't think Miami Childrens is the only one who does it...

  • Yes, apparently, this lady provides this service at several hospitals.  But, she just doesn't return my friend's phone calls.  I'll try the Baptist Hospitals and see if there's someone else who we can call.  Jen, I'll also try searching for that store.  I wasn't going to look into it until later, but my friend is due in less than 4 weeks!

If anything you can call Mercy Hospital and ask them! Maybe they'll be able to give you the name of the store. I'm sure they have the lady's info there.

  • Thanks for the tip!  I have to go into work now, but I'll try later when I get home.
  • Up here it's the tax collector's office that has people certified to inspect the carseats. They won't install it, but if you bring it installed they will inspect it and fix it if it's not right.

I remember with E, I was at Bellini and one of the person's that worked there actually checked car seat installations. I don't know if he has "certification," but it can't hurt to call and ask!

  • Call the Coral Gables Police Department and Fire Department!  City of Miami and Miami Dade don't do them anymore (they don't want to be sued) but CG did them when i was pregnant with Abby.  I think it was the PD, not the FD, but they do it for free.
  • I ran into a check at Miami Children's Hospital by coincidence one day and they did a great job! They turned my Marathon  rear-facing which is the safest position and she put a pool noodle underneathe so it would give him more leg room. Also, they checked my car manual to make sure the latch system was correct. (It wasn't, I had to switch to the seat belt installation). Find out what date and time they do it and just show up. There was a big sign by the 62ave entrance that led you straight to the safety check station in a parking garage... there were quite a few people providing the inspections that day.
  • Thanks, ladies!

The lady from MCH actually called my friend today.  Turns out she was just on vacation, lol.  She has an appointment for this Saturday.  I have her contact info now, but I'll keep the other recs in mind when it's my turn.
