Babies: 3 - 6 Months

? an about getting a large baby to STTN

LO will be 6 Months in 6 days and he wakes up 3 times a night and drinks a full bottle every time.

I'm worried that his large size is why he wakes up that many times at night. He weighs 24 pounds and is 27 1/2 inches long.

I'm worried if I soothe him back to sleep i'll be making him go hungry. Does anyone have any advice on this subject?

Thanks in advance

Edit: I have tried cereal in a bottle... it doesn't work

  • My initial thought is that he's waking up because he's hungry Stick out tongue  The only way to solve that would be to have him eat more during the day.  Have you asked pedi about it?  I would take the total ounces hes drinking and figure out how much he needs in each bottle.  (My DS isn't that old yet, but too maybe that means he needs more solids?)

  • We've tried giving him more and he spits up, meaning he's eaten too much. I give him some baby food durinng the day, but he won't eat more than 1/4th of a jar until he's ready for a bottle.

We just moved and haven't found a pedi yet and my insurance for LO doesn't kick in for another two weeks.

  • LOs pedi told us at his 4 month appointment that it is okay if we are nursing LO to sleep now but at 6 months he will start associating that he needs food to go to sleep. Therefore he told us we should start thinking about feeding LO as the 2nd to last step before putting him to sleep. Then we can lay him down drowsy but awake and if he does wake up in the middle of the night - he won't need to be nursed to sleep. HTH!

  • My DS spits up often as well, so I can relate!

I would say he needs more food during the day.  How about feeding him smaller amounts more often?  How often do you feed him now?

Also, have you looked into a dreamfeed that might help it not seem as bad?!?!

LO eats every two hours. He sometimes dreamfeeds. I'll try the dreamfeeding for a few nights and see what happends.

I also never thought about him falling asleep with a bottle can cuase an issue but it makes sense that he can associate eating with being comfortable enough to fall asleep

  • I am trying to find it for you but I just read that after babies reach a certain age and weight their bodies no longer require food at night.  They are just waking up out of habit.  And if my DD woke up that many times at night she would eat a full bottle as well.....I have been reading Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child.  Also he is pretty huge so how much is he eating in solids and formula/bm ounces per day? If he is eating solids and 30-32 ounces of formula he doesn't need anymore food (per my pedi).
  • My son was the exact same!! He was a big baby and was 24 lbs at 6 months also. He was waking up 2-3 times a night and draining a 8 oz bottle. He was on solids and still was eating 50+ oz of formula a day!  I knew he didn't need to eat at night anymore..so I decided to let him cry through a feeding one night and he fell asleep withen 10 mins and didn't wake till morning,..same thing next night and then within 3 days he never woke again. I think it was a habit, and not hunger.
  • I just wanted to add that the only way you are going to know if he really needs the feedings or if he's just waking up out of habit is to try and either offer him the pacifier or let him cry through the feeding, as another poster suggested.

If your son is truly hungry then he will let you know and nothing will be able to calm him until you give him the bottle.  If he doesn't actually need the bottle then you should be able to soothe him another way and get him back to sleep.

I would try it and see what happens.
