I failed my 1 hr non-fasting glucose test. Many people fail this so I wasn't too worried.
When the OB's staff called back to tell me I failed and to set up the 3 hour fasting glucose test, I refused to take it. There was no way I was going to stop eating at midnight, go to the OB's office at 8 am, get my blood drawn, drink 100 ml glucose solution, wait an hour, have a blood draw and wait another hour to have another blood draw after that. I would end up with a migraine that would take me 2 days to get rid of. Especially since I know there are other ways to test for the information they wanted.
I ended up doing a different type of fasting 1 hour test where I had a blood draw at 8 am, got to eat a normal breakfast and then had a blood draw an hour after that. And they tested my A1C levels too. (Indicator test to show what my average insulin levels are for the past 3 months)
My A1C and 2nd fasting test both came back well within normal ranges. I do NOT have GD. But the OB today decided that at 28 weeks I had to take the 3 hour fasting test. And I said no- again. If I wouldn't agree to it the first time after an abnormal test result, why would I agree to it now, after having 2 super normal test results?
I ended up carefully explaining that I didn't have to do anything when it comes to my care or the medical care of my baby unless I'm in imminent danger. Kthanxbai.
I was steamed when I left but I've settled down now. I can't stand it when medical staff try to force you to do something that you KNOW you don't have to do.
Re: Got into an argument with the OB today about GD
I think I should take a lesson from you on sticking up for myself when it comes to doctors!

Thanks for the support ladies, I knew I wasn't being an irrational pregnant woman. (Which was brought up during my visit, btw).
I know! That's what I kept saying- that doesn't make any sense!
But she said because I failed the initial non-fasting 1 hour, that they required me to take the 3 hour.
I'm being seen at the USF Women's Health Center because that's where my Perinatologist practices out of.
I hope that no one tries to bully you where you're being seen.
But just remember, there's no such thing as a "required" test. And if you aren't comfortable with the tests they ask you to take, ask them what the alternatives are.
At this point, I'm pretty sure I'm not repeating a one hour test. She seemed adamant that they only allow the 1 hour tests one time. (I did a 1 hour fasting and a 1 hour non fasting and that's the only kind there is.) If the OB brings it up again in 4 weeks, I'm pretty sure I'll just request that they start doing finger sticks to check my insulin while I'm in the office. Not fun, but also not going to make me sick to my stomach either.
Yep, that's where I go! I was less than happy with the doctor I saw yesterday, otherwise I've had a pretty good experience. We saw a great midwife on our first visit and will be requesting the same one going forward.
Way to go, Mrs Techie! I understand the OB's concern, but... seriously. No need for them to be a snot! Your body is YOURS.
And, I hate to say it, but some doctors are just test-happy. I had one when I first graduated from college that his nurse let me pass out and crack my head open. Not much fun, obviously. But THEN, so he wouldn't be slammed with a lawsuit or something, he did a bunch of heart tests and sent me to a neurologist since my insurance was really good. In retrospect, he was just CYA and making extra money, but I was young and freaked out.
I had GD last time. Failed the 1hr by a little, and the 3hr by a decent amount.
The 3hr is not that awful- you're not gonna die. I ended up on Insulin at night to control my morning #'s. Blood sugar totally under control, and I still had a 9lb 11oz baby!!! I fear for how big he would've been if I had ignored my GD.
Just sayin'.... there IS a medical reason your doctor asks you to do these things.
I failed the initial 1 hr test by a lot. But that test has more than an 70% fail rate.
I'm sure the 3 hour test is not the worst thing that I'll be asked to do during this pregnancy. And yes, there are solid medical reasons behind asking women to do certain tests. However, there are multiple ways to gain the information they need and many doctors do NOT discuss the additional testing options unless you ask (or demand in my case).
In this instance, I know that the 3 hour test will make me sick for 2 days. Migraines with no treatment options are miserable and I know I don't have to suffer that way when a single blood draw can give them the information they need.
