Canada Babies

Went for big u/s today....

It was not the experience we had hoped for.

The clinic is a private one, so I thought it would be fantastic, friendly appointment. Instead the minute we arrived the receptionist handed me a sheet that read "This is NOT an ultrasound for entertainment. It is a MEDICAL proceedure. Your partner/spouse will NOT be allowed in during the proceedure, but instead after it has finished. If you would like to know the gender and are after 21 weeks, your physician will make an appointment to discuss the results. Pictures will be printed for $10- no CD's, videos, etc."

I went in on my own while my DH and DD waited in the waiting room. Then I had to wait in another smaller waiting room and was finally called in. First thing she said was "Want to know the sex?" I told her yes. Then "4 photos $10"

The tech did not speak to me until the last 10 minutes ( it took about 45 minutes) and I was not allowed to see the screen while she did the u/s.

My DH was called in and she did a very quick 5-7 minute look at the baby.

It was VERY disappointing. Luckily our Dr. has an u/s machine in his office. He said that is the reason he has one-the clinics are so impersonal, quick and it takes forever to get the results.

Just had to vent to others who could relate.

Hope your u/s is a great experience-it should be!

Re: Went for big u/s today....

  • I have had great experiences.....that is up until the last one u/s. I realized that it was a repeat due to baby's position the first time, but the 20 something yr old was almost rude! Never spoke until she wiped my stomach and said ok your done. I was shocked she didn't even ask if I wanted to see the baby. I would kinda understand if something was wrong but the baby is fine!

  • That sounds pretty standard for how u/s are here. Your spouse isn't in there the whole time, just at the end to have a looky loo at the baby. The screen was turned away from me as well so I could not see during the measurements. We didn't have to pay for pictures but I have heard of more clinics going that route. I had some great u/s techs who were chatty but I can imagine when they do u/s all day long they may not want to be chatty through the whole process...plus really they are trying to concentrate and get stuff done.

We didn't want to know the gender but I know u/s techs aren't supposed to discuss any of the results with you. Perhaps this includes gender as well?

I think them telling you all that upfront in such an abrupt manner is a bit weird.

  • Agreed, pretty well sounds like standard procedure to me other than the abruptness. But I'm sorry it was not what you expected and was disappointing.
  • If you book (and pay) for a 3D ultra sound they are much nicer, and talk to you during it.  I know here in Ontario the technicians are told not to tell the mom-to-be too much, as it may contradict what the Dr. says.  They are not doctors, they are there to get measurements, and images.  (My friend's mom is an u/s tech ... so I got the inside scoop!)

I was a little lucky ... at the end the tech kindly turned the screen for me, and printed some great profile shots of our little girl.  She never said anything about health etc, but was laughing along with me while Mia sucked on her toes! he he he

I am with you. We went and had out 18 week u/s at the hospital by where we live and they wouldn't tell us anything and we didn't get to see too much, although the girl was nice to us. So we went to UC Baby and it was like night and day. I know the hospital tech's can't tell you anything and it's not their fault. I would highly recommend UC Baby if you want something a little more. We got over 30 minutes of u/s and DH was allowed in the whole time and we had a live feed so our MIL's and a few friends watched live while we had it done, they could even hear what we were saying. It was FANTASTIC!
