2 month old in fresh water lake

wdyt?  bad idea?  we'll be going on vaca for a few days and there are fresh water kettle ponds where we swim.  i know chlorine in pools etc can be less than great for new baby skin, but do you think a fresh water pond woould be okay?

and if so, would you do a swim diaper this young?  are there any that would fit?  she finally fits into her BG OS's

Re: 2 month old in fresh water lake

  • I would not let her in.  I think the possible germs, etc are more of a concern than the skin, even in a chlorine pool.  I understand that private pools are better but I would not feel comfortable with possible bugs, etc in lakes.

  • I wouldn't do it either.  We just visited my parents in NH and they live on a lake.  I don't know if it was coincidence or if it was because DD swallowed some lake water the first day we were there (and then again like every other day), but she had diarrhea-ish poop almost the whole time we were there.

  • I really don't think there's anything wrong with it, I'd probably give her a bath as soon as you get out of the water though. I'd probably just use a BG without the insert.

  • We did the same with DS when he was really little. He was fine, and we just gave him a bath really soon after getting out.

You could just put her in a diaper without a liner or inserts. The whole purpose of a swim diaper is to contain poop, nothing more nothing less. Chlorine is hell on PUL that's why you wouldn't use a BG or other PUL pocket for a swim diaper.

  • honestly it would never even cross my mind NOT too. but i'm pretty lax about germs and stuff.

Same here. I'd do a pocket diaper with no insert for a swim diaper.

  • It's not really the germs you need to worry about. Babes that little aren't the greatest about regulating their body temperature, so the biggest concern would be not letting your DS get too cold.

  • I asked my pediatrician about this same thing and she said go for it. When we got to the lake, it was teeming with gross blue-green algae so we didn't put him in, but had it been alright, I would have. I would just make sure to rinse her off afterward, and if it were me, I'd try to keep her head far enough away from the water that she doesn't swallow any.
