Natural Birth

hypnobabies question

So, this may be really strange, but I've developed a bit of anxiety that hypnobabies will work SO well for me that I won't know I'm in labor.  I've been having a lot of BH contrax for several weeks.  The last few days they've been increasing in intensity, but I've only had one that made me pause at all.  I can tell when I'm contracting mostly by what I can feel on the outside, like how hard my uterus gets, but I don't feel much other than a little tightness/pressure inside and some general crampiness.

I've been telling myself I don't need to time contrax until I can't keep doing what I'm doing through them, but I'm starting to wonder if I should time them even if they're not very intense to me?  Is it completely nuts to think hypnobabies will help me deal so well with the pressure that I won't feel pain?  I don't want to jump at every BH, but I also don't want to have an accidental home birth...

Please reassure me!  TIA.

Re: hypnobabies question

  • Hmmm...I was actually wondering the exact same thing.  I have started and stopped early labor twice now in the last few days -- each time my contractions (confirmed as "real contractions," not just BH) progressed to as frequent as 4-5 minutes apart, VERY strong pressure, but not what I would consider pain.  Both times labor and delivery said to come on in, but within hours the contractions tapered off, so I decided to wait it out.

I am a little nervous of the same thing -- that I am so deeply relaxed and am feeling very, very strong pressure, but nothing flooring...

  • I think that even if Hypnobabies were to work so well that you feel no pain, you would still feel a lot of pressure and would be able to time that. I would start timing once you notice your "pressure waves" falling into a pattern for more than an hour.

  • To be really honest with you I never felt pain during my hypnobabies labor, That being said though I definetly knew the minute that "real" labor started. It wasnt that it hurt at all, but it was just so different from BH that I knew, and you will know too. I wish I could explain it better but I would not worry about knowing when you are in labor.

This what my hypnobabies moms have reported as well. They 'knew' they were in labor, but were able to go about life as normal, as they got close, they knew they needed to be where ever they planned on delivering, instinctively and calmly.

I was the same way with my 1st HypnoBirth, I never felt a pressure wave, just back pressure and eventually I knew it was time.

Hang in there, trust yourself. You'll know  ;)

This sounds extremely reassuring, THANKS (sorry I am budding in OP).

I hope my labor progresses as smoothly as you have described. So far I love how calmed and relaxed I feel while listening to my CDs.

THANK YOU!  I know I wasn't the OP, but since I had the same question and same uncertainties, I truly appreciate the responses from you ladies!  :)

  • Finally had a chance to pop back in, thanks for the great responses, ladies!  I definitely feel reassured.  And I feel like there have been a couple of times I have felt true "pressure waves", not just BH, so I'm going to trust my instincts on that and start timing when they become more frequent.  How awesome to hear that it really can just feel like pressure and not pain from moms who have been there before!
  • I had a HypnoBabies birth and didn't really feel any pain. I remember thinking "why would anyone want medication for this?". But it got intense at times, like my body just took over. However, until my water broke, I had a hard time figuring out when the pressure waves started and stopped because I was so focused on the tracks I was listening to (and just lying on the couch with my dog). Once my water broke, the pressure waves brought on a strong urge to push so that's when I knew for sure we needed to head to the hospital. I was at 8cm by the time I got there, and he was born an hour later. So your concern about not knowing is nothing to be worried about. That relaxed attitude will keep you laboring comfortably at home until you know you need to go.
