3rd Trimester

Introducing Brody John (Birth Story and PsIP)...

I went for my 39 week checkup on Monday after having ZERO contractions and getting frustrated that I felt nothing was going on.  When my midwife checked me, I was measuring 3cm dilated and 50% effaced.  She asked if I wanted my membranes stripped and I figured "why not" if it could get this baby moving. After an uncomfortable exam, she said I was now 4 cm dilated.  I went home feeling kind of "crampy" but fine.

I slept just as poorly that night as I had been for the past 2 weeks (asleep for 2 hrs, awake for 2 hrs, asleep for 2 hrs, etc).  I woke up at about 5:30 and could not fall back asleep.  I was feeling more crampy and after I got up, I felt some mild contractions starting.  I decided to start timing them around 7am and was surprised to realize that they were 4-5 minutes apart and lasting about 30 seconds long.  They were not very intense, though.  They continued to do this all morning, getting slightly stronger by late morning.  I was convinced we would be driving to the hospital by 1pm since I only labored at home for 6 hours with TJ.  Well, by the time early afternoon hit, the contractions were getting further apart even though they were more intense.  My MIL came and got TJ and the dog after TJ woke from his nap at 3:00. Around 4 pm my contractions started getting closer again and after about 1 hour of 45 second intense contractions, 5 minutes apart, we decided it was time to go.

We left the house around 5:30 and got to the hospital at about 6 pm.  When we got there, I changed into my gown and filled out some paperwork while pacing around my room.  My midwife came shortly thereafter and checked me around 7pm.  I was measuring 7 cm  and 80%.  She asked if I wanted my water broken. I was uncertain and she told me it would make things progress much quicker.  I decided to let her break my water and the contrations intensified IMMEDIATELY.  After 15 minute of very strong labor, I felt the urge to push.  She checked me and I was already fully dialated.  I pushed for only 12 minutes and Brody John was born at 7:27 on July 20.  He was put right onto my chest (we wanted to wait for the cord to stop pulsating before cutting it) and it was the most amazing thing having him lay there on me as soon as he came out.

Right away we noticed his cute little dimples just like his big brother has.  My hubby cut the cord and Brody latched on immediately with no problem.  He just layed on me for about an hour as I was getting repaired down below (2nd degree tear which we assume is mainly because I tore so badly with TJ).  When he finally unlatched, they brought him over to be weighed and he was 9 lbs 3 oz.  My hubby, Brody and I just enjoyed having some wonderful first moments while we chatted with my midwives.  It was so nice.  We were not rushed to move along to the post-partum ward.

When we were ready, I got up and walked to my room with the nurse while my hubby took Brody to the nursery to get measures (21 1/4") and bathed.  It really could not have been more perfect.  I labored much longer at home then I was hoping to at the time, but we picked the right time to come to the hospital and I am so glad the final labor went quickly.  It feels so good to no longer be pregnant.

Brody did so well last night.  He is latching VERY well and he is already a thumb sucker and it is just so adorable.  He even slept well for us.  I fed him last night at 1:30 and then had to wake him to eat again at 5:30.  I hope this is a glimpse of what our nights to come will be like.  All in all, this was a great birth experience (again).  I can't wait for TJ to get here in a few hours to meet his little brother!!
